Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY : Under the general supervision of the Manager Tourism Thunder Bay, undertakes moderately complex projects related to tourism and economic development.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Participates as a member of a project team.
  • Undertakes a broad spectrum of destination development projects related to tourism and economic development.
  • Research sport tourism event opportunities, engage with sport event organizations and engage in sport tourism event attraction.
  • Performs detailed analysis of tourism and economic development opportunities, prepares and implements related strategic and promotional plans.
  • Performs detailed analysis and work associated with the completion of research projects, funding applications, and feasibility studies.
  • Initiates and conducts discussions and negotiations with the private and public sectors regarding tourism and economic development opportunities.
  • Provides information to prospective entrepreneurs, agencies and the community on matters relating to tourism and economic development opportunities.
  • Identifies and promotes improvement to and expansion of existing businesses or industries.
  • Completes projects jointly undertaken by the City and provincial or federal levels of government, or other partners, as assigned.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS :

Education / Experience :

  • Degree in economics, business administration, or a related field along with three years’ experience in economic or industrial development; or
  • Diploma in business administration, or a related field along with five years’ experience in economic or industrial development

Skills / Abilities :

  • Ability to function and contribute as an effective team member and to work independently
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to work with entrepreneurs and be knowledgeable of the relevant provincial legislation regarding municipal economic development;
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Must be proficient in the use of computers and current related software
  • Familiarity with markets and marketing, tourism and economic development opportunities
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement when dealing with confidential or sensitive issues
  • Must be competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health & Safety Act

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT :

  • Will be required to travel to various work locations and provide own transportation
  • Must have a valid driver’s licence
  • Working beyond normal working hours and out of town travel (by land and air) will be required from time to time
