Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY : Under the general supervision of the Manager Tourism Thunder Bay, undertakes moderately complex projects related to tourism and economic development.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Participates as a member of a project team.
- Undertakes a broad spectrum of destination development projects related to tourism and economic development.
- Research sport tourism event opportunities, engage with sport event organizations and engage in sport tourism event attraction.
- Performs detailed analysis of tourism and economic development opportunities, prepares and implements related strategic and promotional plans.
- Performs detailed analysis and work associated with the completion of research projects, funding applications, and feasibility studies.
- Initiates and conducts discussions and negotiations with the private and public sectors regarding tourism and economic development opportunities.
- Provides information to prospective entrepreneurs, agencies and the community on matters relating to tourism and economic development opportunities.
- Identifies and promotes improvement to and expansion of existing businesses or industries.
- Completes projects jointly undertaken by the City and provincial or federal levels of government, or other partners, as assigned.
- Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS :
Education / Experience :
- Degree in economics, business administration, or a related field along with three years’ experience in economic or industrial development; or
- Diploma in business administration, or a related field along with five years’ experience in economic or industrial development
Skills / Abilities :
- Ability to function and contribute as an effective team member and to work independently
- Must have a demonstrated ability to work with entrepreneurs and be knowledgeable of the relevant provincial legislation regarding municipal economic development;
- Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Must be proficient in the use of computers and current related software
- Familiarity with markets and marketing, tourism and economic development opportunities
- Ability to exercise independent judgement when dealing with confidential or sensitive issues
- Must be competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health & Safety Act
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT :
- Will be required to travel to various work locations and provide own transportation
- Must have a valid driver’s licence
- Working beyond normal working hours and out of town travel (by land and air) will be required from time to time
