Legal Counsel Canada COE

AtkinsRéalis Legal Department is seeking a Legal Counsel to join the Canada Legal Team. This position would be ideally based in Vancouver (but could also be based in Toronto) and will report to the Director, Legal Affairs, Canada based in Montreal.

The successful candidate will support and advise the company (in all sectors of the business) on a wide range of legal issues relating to engineering and construction projects.

You will be working on a variety of matters including contract and risk reviews, setting up complex partnering arrangements, advising on and conducting contract negotiations, assisting with live project issues and work with a variety of key stakeholders across our businesses, including with the internal dispute resolution legal team for claims and disputes.

You will be working in an inclusive, collaborative and supportive team focusing on being trusted advisors; providing pro-active, commercial, strategic legal advice and outstanding client service to their internal clients;

as well as the development of its team members.

The position is a flexible mixture of home and office-based working with travel as required.

Your role within the Team

As a member of the Legal Canada and Major Projects team, you will report to the Senior Director, Legal Affairs Canada and be responsible for :

  • Drafting and reviewing a wide variety of contract documents, including project agreements, construction and services agreements, interface agreements and other ancillary documents such as NDAs, parent company guarantees and other forms of security.
  • Advising on all manner of collaboration agreements, including MOUs, teaming agreements, joint venture and other partnering agreements.
  • Provide legal and business advice a on a wide range of issues.
  • When required, participate in the negotiation process (with clients, partners, subcontractors and suppliers).
  • Liaising with and assisting in managing external counsel on certain matters.
  • Assisting in various ad-hoc matters such as intellectual property, competition and procurement law issues.
  • Liaising with other corporate functions (Tax, Treasury, Insurance, Corporate Secretary, Integrity, and Audit and Project Oversight).
  • Assisting with the drafting or review of standard terms and conditions, templates, playbooks and practice notes.
  • Training colleagues within the business on legal matters, including recent developments in the law.
  • Key contributor to risk management strategies.
  • Assisting the business units with pursuing projects in Canada, including participating in commercial risk and business reviews.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships across the company and contribute to cross-functional or departmental projects and teams.
  • Act in accordance with Company policies, including, for example, the Code of Business Conduct and Ethics and ensure policies are understood and followed by direct reports, if any.

Qualifications for the Position

  • Completion of a law degree and a member in good standing with the Law Society of Vancouver.
  • Relevant experience in engineering, construction, procurement, commercial contracts. Experience with Indigenous Affairs is an asset.
  • 6 to 9 years of relevant experience with a leading law firm and / or in-house team.
  • Excellent drafting skills and attention to detail.
  • Creative strategic mindset with proven ability to provide timely, sound and practical legal and commercial advice in a demanding, fast-paced and multidisciplinary environment.
  • Great communication skills and the ability to deal with internal and external clients at all levels, including executive management.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills;
  • Results-oriented and client-focused with a commitment to excellence;
  • Highly developed emotional intelligence.
  • Organized, self-motivated and autonomous and the ability to manage a large portfolio of work with various competing priorities.
  • Accountability, sound judgment, pragmatic business acumen and the ability to take ownership of an issue and provide concise and timely advice.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a professional client service orientation towards internal and external stakeholders.

Expected compensation for this role is (between Pay Range $87,520 - $120,340 annually) Base salaries are determined according to several parameters like skills, experience, and potential impact on the role.
