Location : Peel, Durham, York, Toronto Regions - Ontario

Work Hours : Part time hours in June for training, then 37.5 hours per week Monday Friday starting June 24 until August 30, 2024

Day Camp Lifeguard position maintains a safe aquatic environment at all times, including meeting regulatory and YMCA requirements.

In this role, you will :

  • Ensure that all safety and life guarding procedures are adhered to, and in the event of an emergency respond as trained by the Lifesaving Society and YMCA
  • Ensure that members, volunteers and other staff adhere to pool conduct guidelines and maintain order in their designated area as a proactive approach to ensuring safety and accident prevention
  • Set up and takes down recreational, program and other equipment as required at the same time checking that equipment is safe and in good repair (reporting immediately all malfunctions and removing the damaged equipment immediately from circulation)
  • Complete a safety check of lifesaving equipment prior to each shift
  • Assist staff team in some cleaning duties related to pool and equipment
  • Ensure qualifications and certifications as required by the YMCA and regulatory standards are current at all times.
  • In collaboration with individual program members, program volunteers and YMCA program staff, assists and encourages program members to access additional appropriate programs offered at this location.
  • Responsible for attending all staff trainings and meetings; arriving on time, and actively participating and contributing to the development of all camp staff
  • Ensure Health & Safety procedures are being followed and maintained and contribute to the cleaning, safety and maintenance to camp sites
  • Act as a positive role model for the campers and fellow staff through embodying the YMCA values, policies and procedures, Day Camp conditions of employment / guidelines and the Ontario Camping Association standards

What you need to succeed :

  • Commitment to the YMCA’s
  • Focus on the health, safety and wellbeing of all children, youth, and vulnerable people in YMCA programs including understanding legal and moral obligations related to reporting suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services
  • YMCA Competencies : Accountable, Relationship-Builder, Improvement-Orientated, Team Player & Leader, Equity and Wellbeing Promoter

You bring :

  • Minimum 16 years old by June 1st
  • Current Certifications in the following Lifesaving Society awards : National Lifeguard (NL) Award, Standard First Aid & CPR level C
  • Previous experience in lifeguarding an asset
  • YMCA Day Camp experience is an asset
  • Ability to use frequent light to medium physical effort : Lifting up to 50 lbs. by bending, carrying, pushing and pulling (i.e. canoes, kayaks)
  • Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and in a team environment
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with families, staff and volunteers
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to lead a group of children
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and building a sense of belonging
