The Design Director will use exceptional design skills and knowledge of the current market to help guide the creation and innovation of commercially viable products, from concept to production.

We are looking for a seasoned design leader with a strong POV on colour, print, and trend that will help develop our creative vision.

This position will work closely with and report to the Director of Merchandising and the senior leadership team in the ideation / development of product vision in our men's and women's divisions to ensure the brand values, aesthetic integrity, and overall presentation remain focused, relevant, and commercially viable.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Drive research and analysis of upcoming fashion, market trends and competitive product offerings to understand the overall market and to identify opportunities relevant to our product.
• Play a key role in strategic seasonal vision and design direction and share these findings with key stakeholders for their use.
• Think innovatively at all stages of the creative, design, and development process.
• Research to be at the forefront of trends and shifts in the Apparel and Fashion landscapes. Stay abreast of parallel and influential industries, leveraging that awareness for American Tall.
• Work with our Product Development team to ensure garments meet fit, comfort, and construction goals for their respective categories.
• Motivate, mentor, and develop cross-functional team members to deliver peak performance and ensure players can execute their responsibilities within the seasonal and strategic brand vision parameters.
• Build strong and synergistic relationships with cross-functional partners, Merchandising, Marketing and Creative, Sales, Technical Design, PD, and Production.

Experience, Education & Designations

• 8-10 years of experience in Apparel Design with demonstrated success.
• 4-year post-secondary degree in Apparel / Fashion Design.

Knowledge, Skills & Attributes

• Well-versed in emerging fashion trends and new technological advancements (fabrics, fibres, tech, construction etc.).
• Ability to translate trends to specific targeted consumer needs.
• Strong knowledge in athletic / athleisure, sportswear, denim, and tailored categories.
• Strong aesthetic with exceptional silhouette, colour, and trend-forecasting ability.
• Expert knowledge of knit / woven fabrics.
• Requires strong knowledge of sewing techniques, pattern construction, fitting, grading and costing.
• A strong aptitude for working effectively in dynamic environments. This includes a proven ability to embrace new ideas and experiences, actively pursue learning opportunities, approach challenges with innovation and creativity, and contribute to and drive organizational change.
• Exceptional communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to effectively persuade and influence others. A high level of confidence and ease in relating to others.
• Taking initiative, exercising personal leadership, providing direction, and taking responsibility.
• The ability to spark innovation within the network by introducing new ideas and challenges and promoting creative problem-solving.
• Ability to travel up to 20% - potential for domestic and international travel (vendor on-site trips, trade shows, market shopping).
• Proficient in PLM, Microsoft Office, Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop.
