The Division of Medical Oncology and Hematology (DMOH) is an academic and service unit within the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto and University Health Network (UHN) and Sinai Health System (SHS).
The Blood Disorders Program (BDP) is dedicated to managing complex, serious diseases of the blood that do not require intensive chemotherapy.
The BDP has an interprofessional approach to patient care divided into six main areas including Thrombosis and Hemostasis.
The Thrombosis and Hemostasis clinic is the first and largest comprehensive anticoagulation clinic in Canada and has expertise in cancer-related thrombosis and peri-operative management.

The Division of Medical Oncology and Hematology seeks to identify a Physician Assistant to join our vibrant team to provide outstanding care to our patients.
The PA joining the team would participate in the day-to-day management of patients on an outpatient basis in close collaboration with staff hematologists, fellows, nurses and other support personnel.
The PA will be based at the Toronto General Hospital, and function within DMOH and provide patient care in a team setting.
The PA will focus on improving and enhancing the access to care, the quality of care, and therapy related symptom management.
The PA will be offered training and educational opportunities both at orientation and also at an ongoing basis, and will be expected to develop their potential as a leader and teacher in DMOH.
Additionally, there is also potential for involvement in research clinical trials.
Duties
- Utilizing and demonstrating a theoretical knowledge and advanced level of clinical competence and excellence in caring for DMOH patients
- Collecting and interpreting data about the health of patients, symptom management, developing a medical diagnosis and management plan
- Will have quality improvement, research and administrative responsibilities
- Participate in policy or clinical pathway development as well as education and professional development
- Perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required
Qualifications
- Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada (PACCC) or eligible to be certified by PACCC
- Eligible to work in Canada / Ontario
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and with respect in an oral and written format with patients, public, colleagues and other health disciplines
- Demonstrated ability to perform complete and appropriate clinical assessment and development of a treatment plan in accordance with medical directives
- Proficient and appropriate use of diagnostic and procedural skills
- Demonstrated effective problem solving and critical thinking skills
- Demonstrated and proven ability to work in a collaborative care model with all members of the health care team
- Demonstrated ability to perform well in critical and high stress situations
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing education activities supporting ongoing professional learning
- Demonstrated commitment to patient safety
- Demonstrated ability to apply basic computer skills
- Willingness to work with the DMOH team to develop appropriate medical directives and evolve the role to meet the patient / program needs
