Course Code & Title : AST424H1Y Introduction to Astrophysical Research (0.5 FCE)

Course Description : Course based on reading and research in individual and group formats. A literature study that develops methods and skills applicable to research in the physical sciences, with an emphasis on communication, including writing proposals and reports, and delivering presentations.

This course is intended for students in the final year of the Astronomy & Astrophysics Major. Students are required to attend the weekly departmental colloquia.

Not eligible for CR / NCR option.

Estimated course enrolment : 20-45 students

Estimated Teaching Assistance suppor t : 200 hours

Teaching schedule (in person mode) : Fridays 3 : 00 PM - 5 : 00 PM;

Sessional dates of appointment : September 1, 2024 - April 30, 2025

Qualifications :

Ph.D. with an academic background in astronomy or astrophysics. Both : 1) Recent research activity as indicated by refereed papers, and 2) experience in supervision of research projects is required.

Relevant teaching experience at the university level.

Description of Duties :

  • Delivering the lectures in-person on campus.
  • Maintaining course administration if applicable : course website on Quercus, marking schemes, lectures, tutorials, assignments, tests, and final assessments.
  • Providing appropriate contact time outside of class to students, through office hours, email, the course website and / or the course bulletin board.
  • Managing the grades and submitting final course grades, including the timely completion and release of grades and feedback to students throughout the term.

Salary inclusive of vacation pay :

  • Sessional Lecturer I $9,457.90;
  • Sessional Lecturer I - Long Term $9,930.79;
  • Sessional Lecturer II $10,121.77;
  • Sessional Lecturer II - Long Term $10,326.62;
  • Sessional Lecturer III $10,362.76;

Sessional Lecturer III - Long Term $10,570.02.
