YMCA Camp Pine Crest is an overnight camp serving children, families, and organizations through naturally focussed programs that embody the mission, vision, and outcomes of the YMCA.
Camp Pine Crest is made up of 650 acres of Muskoka wilderness surrounded by 3 interconnected lakes with 8km of shoreline;
has over 26km of hiking trails and 7,500 sq. ft. of dock, and has 60 buildings.
The Mental Health Specialist cares for the overall health of the Pine Crest community, with an increased focused on the mental health and wellbeing of staff, participants, and volunteers.
Daily responsibilities such as health and wellness checks, first aid assessments, medication administration, and stocking first aid kits are important components to keeping our staff and campers well.
This team also works with the Out-Tripping Directors to support health concerns from our out trips, contributing to decision making in regard to treatment in the field.
Wellness staff must be willing to listen, problem solve, and work as a team to promote wellness and health at Pine Crest.
They will provide leadership and role modelling to all camp staff regarding sun safety, healthy eating, adequate sleep and regular exercise among others.
In this role, you will :
- Support campers and staff to have a positive experience at camp through check-ins with campers, camper groups, and counsellors
- Support our camp community’s overall health and wellness by actively providing resources and support to the camp community, reviewing health forms of campers and staff, being aware of pertinent health information that may require special attention throughout the summer, and checking in with staff and campers
- Day-to-day operational management of the camp wellness programs, working with the wellness director / camp nurse to keep inventory of all medical supplies, laundry, restocking, organizing camper and stock medications, etc
- Respond to and rectify first aid situations, ensuring they are handled promptly with care, and communicate with the camp director, external healthcare staff / hospital, and parents as necessary
- Provide leadership to the staff team, support the camp director and coordinator in leading health and wellness training to staff, ensuring a focus on both physical and mental health and safety
- Administer medication, responsible for dispensing camper medication according to the direction of camper health forms
- Support the camp out-tripping program through check-ins pre-and-post out-trips and support counsellors in packing and inventorying first aid kits
- Ensure administrative tasks are completed accurately and on time, including all paperwork associated with the camp wellness program being filled out as required;
maintain complete records of any accidents / incidents
- Continuously build relationships with members, staff, volunteers, and community partners
- Attend all staff trainings and meetings, show up on time, and actively participate contributing to the development of all staff members
- Ensure Health & Safety procedures are being followed and maintained and share with the staff team the duties of ensuring it is clean, organized, and safe to ensure the health & safety of all camper, staff, and volunteers
- Act as a positive role model for all participants and fellow staff by embodying the values of the YMCA, Pine Crest’s guiding principles, YMCA policies and procedures, and Ontario Camps Association guidelines

What you need to succeed :
- Commitment to the YMCA’s Mission, Vision and Values
- Focus on the health, safety and wellbeing of all children, youth, and vulnerable people in YMCA programs including understanding legal and moral obligations related to reporting suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services

You bring :
- G Class license, minimum 21 years of age by the start of contract for insurance purposes
- Completed degree in post-secondary education such as Nursing, Child and Youth Studies, or Social Work
- Previous Experience working with children and youth in a professional mental health setting
- Mental Health First Aid by the first day of employment and valid until at least the last day of your contract
- Wilderness First Aid considered an asset

- Ability to provide mentorship and guidance to both inexperienced and seasoned staff
- Ability to deliver feedback in a timely, professional, and constructive manner
- Flexibility regarding assigned working hours, including days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays required
