Job Summary

The Vital Statistics Agency is responsible through legislation for the following registries : births, deaths, stillbirths, marriages, change of name, adoptions, wills and the health status registry.

The Agency registers all vital events occurring in British Columbia and maintains registries and records of those events.

The Medical Coding Clerk assists in the maintenance, enhancement and use of a statistical and medical database within the Vital Statistics Agency by verifying and processing event details and medical diagnosis information as provided on Medical Certificate of Death, Notice of Birth and Stillbirth documents.

A variety of federal and provincial partners receive the medically coded data generated by this unit.

There are approximately 45000 deaths, and 42000 live births annually. This position requires initial screening of all documents when they are received at the medical coding unit.

Job Requirements :

• Grade 12 graduation or equivalent (GED).
• Completion of a recognized Medical Terminology Course within the last five (5) years or an equivalent may be considered.
• Experience in detailed and accurate data entry.
• Experience using a variety of desktop tools such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Experience working in a medical setting in a hospital, clinic or physicians' office.

Preference may be given to applicants with :

• Experience interpreting medical terminology.
• Experience with ICD 9 and ICD 10 medical coding (ICD - International Classification of Diseases).
