Reporting to the Senior Director, Marketing & Communications, the Marketing Advisor plays a key role in developing and executing strategies to enhance the visibility of climate change programs, opportunities and impacts.
The role works in close collaboration with program staff to :
- create compelling content;
- create and distribute internal and external marketing and communication materials;
- manage social media platforms and website;
- coordinate outreach events; and
- build relationships with key stakeholders.
A strong understanding of stakeholder management is required to engage key partners in development, launch and ongoing delivery of programs, tools, and resources.
The incumbent will possess strong communication and marketing skills, knowledge of energy efficiency, renewable energy technologies and climate adaptation, and an understanding of the energy, environmental, and economic landscape in Alberta.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with staff to develop and deploy engaging, thoughtful, and shareable content and events that drive participation in Alberta Municipalities’ Sustainability Services programs, particularly the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre.
- Draft and create content for : website, social media, marketing collateral, presentation slide decks, speeches, talking points, fact sheets, articles, blog posts, program guidebooks, success stories, newsletters, advertisements, surveys, media releases, trade shows, etc.
- Draft, compile, edit, and execute letters, briefing notes, requests for decision, presentations, reports, media releases and other communications and information as required.
- Ensure that all brand communication elements are consistent and accurate, and are reflective of the current brand strategy, plan, and communication objectives.
- Coordinate external vendors (creative and web agencies) if required to ensure creative is aligned with messaging and brand.
- Ability to stay abreast of trends, risks, and innovations in climate change, energy efficiency, renewable energy and property assessed clean energy.
- Manage all owned-media properties such as websites, social media accounts, newsletters, and conference content and advise of similar products delivered with partner organizations.
- In collaboration with staff, plan and coordinate workshops, webinars, events, and various creative marketing, education and outreach tasks that build awareness of and inspire participation in Alberta Municipalities Sustainability Services programs in cities, towns, villages, summer villages, municipal districts and counties across Alberta.
- Track, monitor, and report performance of communication channels and outreach efforts.
- Manage and evaluate Google Analytics, AdWords.
- Develop and report on key performance measures (e.g., awareness, understanding, attitudes, and participation rates).
- Ensure Alberta Municipalities Sustainability Services’ stakeholders have the correct information and marketing materials to promote climate mitigation and adaptation programs.
- Develop and maintain relationships with community partners, media outlets, and other relevant organizations to coordinate efforts, communicate opportunities, and amplify profile.
- Participate and present Alberta Municipalities Sustainability Services program information and benefits of participating at events, webinars, conferences, trade shows, workshops and meetings of relevant organizations (working on evenings and weekends may be required).
Know-How
Practical / Technical Knowledge
- Post-secondary education in communications, journalism, environmental education, marketing and communications and / or other closely related field, or any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.
- 2 - 5 years of experience developing content for marketing and communications strategies in the energy efficiency and / or renewable energy sector, provincial or municipal government(s), or a related field is preferred.
- Demonstrated experiencing in developing persuasive and engaging content (e.g., website content, blogs, videos, social media posts).
- Demonstrated experience with creating media, including print, digital, video and radio.
- Demonstrated experience in website management.
- Understanding of how to identify, map, and manage stakeholders. Stakeholder engagement experience will be a plus.
- Knowledge of and experience with principles of project management.
- Proficiency in WordPress, social media scheduling tools (e.g. Sprout), Adobe Suite (mostly Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator), and email marketing tools (e.g. MailChimp).
- Savvy with social media and marketing digital strategies (e.g., X / Twitter, Facebook, , Google Analytics, search engine optimization, etc.).
- Demonstrated fluency in using standard office software packages (MS Office : SharePoint, Planner, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Prefer 2 or more years of experience working with energy efficiency, renewable energy, environmental management systems, climate change initiatives or similar.

- Knowledge of existing Alberta Municipalities Sustainability Services programs as well as other local, provincial, and federal programs related to climate mitigation and adaptation.

- Ability to apply detailed knowledge of organizational procedures to make independent decisions and serve as a credible resource.

- Ability to distill technical and program information to program participants, with varying levels of energy efficiency and / or renewable energy expertise, in a clear and easy-to-understand manner.
