Unit Summary :
A 37 bed neuro medical surgical ICU that is also the regional stroke and neurosciences center. Specifically as a stroke and vascular center we see patients requiring hyperacute stroke care, post endovascular thrombectomies, abdominal aortic aneurysms.
All other patients are of the medical surgical nature.
The Unit is staffed by an interprofessional team. Our distinctive ICU offers first-rate care in an innovative environment supporting the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs of the community.

Job Summary :
Reporting to the Clinical Manager of the Intensive Care Unit, the ideal candidate will be focused on providing superior patient centered care in a dynamic, complex and rapidly changing environment where they will be given the opportunity to drive innovation and change.
Job Description :
- Assessing a patient’s condition and planning and implementing patient care plans
- Treating wounds and providing advanced life support
- Assisting physicians in performing procedures
- Observing and recording patient vital signs
- Ensuring that ventilators, monitors and other types of medical equipment function properly
- Administering intravenous fluids and medications
- Ordering diagnostic tests
- Collaborating with fellow members of the critical care team
- Responding to life-saving situations, using nursing standards and protocols for treatment
- Acting as patient advocate
- Providing education and support to patient families
- Demonstrating a commitment to a healthy and safe workplace for self and others (staff, patients, families, by taking all reasonable precautions and working in compliance with hospital related policies, health and safety legislation and best practices and completing relevant mandatory education as required
Qualifications :
- Graduate of a recognized College or School of Nursing and preferably hold a Baccalaureate degree
- Registered in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) or currently meet the eligibility criteria to register in good standing in the Temporary Class or General Class with the CNO
- BCLS required
- ACLS required within 6 months of hire
- 3-5 years Intensive Care Unit nursing experience or successful completion of a recognized intensive care course with 1 year of ICU nursing experience preferred
- 2 years of acute medical / surgical and Neurosurgical experience preferred
- Advanced arrhythmias and 12 lead ECG interpretation
- Experienced with monitors, pumps, ECG machines, phlebotomy, and invasive pressure monitoring ventilators.
- CCRN certification preferred
- Excellent decision making & problem solving skills
- Strong leadership & assessment skills
- History of ongoing professional development and be a self-directed learner
- Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team and Commitment to customer service and teamwork
- Excellence in communication, both written and verbal
- Knowledge and skill of PRISMA or CRRT an asset
- Experienced in patient education and sharing knowledge of expected outcomes and care
- Advanced physical assessment skills
- Positive attendance and work record essential
