Job Description

BMO Global Asset Management is assembling a team of Investment Specialists, each of whom will be closely associated with one or more investment teams (which may be internal or employed by subadvisors).

Each Investment Specialist is responsible for :

  • understanding the thoughts and actions of an investment team,
  • placing those thoughts and actions within the context of the products managed by that investment team, and
  • articulating this information to internal and external stakeholders, in order to retain and attract investments in these products.

The Managing Director, Investment Specialists will lead this team. A top priority for the leader in this role is to assemble the team, whether through internal transfers or through external hires, and to ensure that its output is of high quality and consistency across the entire team.

The Managing Director's objective is to ensure that each Investment Specialist :

  • acquires and maintains an expert level of knowledge of assigned products, and of the competitive landscape for these products
  • develops and maintains deep working relationships with the Investment teams associated with assigned products
  • fully supports assigned products with content, communications and messages aligned with BMO GAM's overall business and sales objectives
  • effectively and clearly communicates information on product activity and positioning to internal and external stakeholders
  • assists in completing RFP / RFI questionnaires
  • responds constructively to ad hoc requests from the Distribution team, whether for product information or for sales training
  • ensures accuracy of all product collateral
  • utilizes manager evaluation tools and databases and provides recommendations on new tools when appropriate
  • advocates for new product development and enhancements to existing products as appropriate

To achieve this objective, the Managing Director, Investment Specialists will :

  • guide the team's collaboration and development and manage all monthly and quarterly update processes for marketing collateral
  • liaise with sales force to ensure timeliness and high-quality standards for client meetings are met
  • coordinate efforts between departments (Investments, Sales, Product, Legal / Compliance, Operations, etc.) as required

Key Accountabilities

Conducts investment research to support portfolio and business objectives, including researching managers and / or performing fundamental, quantitative, or credit research that supports portfolio management and the development of new investment strategies.

Works closely with Portfolio Managers and the portfolio management team to capture research in the portfolio management process.

  • May consult to or serve on various committees and task forces.
  • Sets the research strategy over a specific timeframe.
  • Develops the business case by identifying needs, analysing potential options and assessing expected return on investment.
  • Recommends business priorities, advises on resource requirements and develops roadmap for strategic execution.
  • Acts as the prime contact for internal / external stakeholder relationships, which may include regulators.
  • May generally, interact with large and complex clients, territories, issues and relationships.
  • Defines business requirements for analytics and reporting to ensure data insights inform business decision making.
  • Develops and applies the framework for databases; oversees database management in adherence with data governance standards.
  • Monitors and tracks performance, and addresses any issues.
  • Designs and produces regular and ad-hoc reports, and dashboards.
  • Analyses complex data and information to provide insights and recommendations.
  • Leads the execution of operational programs; assesses and adapts as needed to ensure quality of execution.
  • Develops and manages comprehensive information management systems; designs and / or leads initiatives to improve processes, analysis and reporting.
  • Executes research according to the specific discipline / portfolio management requirements (manager research, quantitative research, fundamental research, etc.).
  • Develops, tests, and implements selection factors and models, asset allocation factors and models, and portfolio construction and risk modeling.
  • May research and select managers for their investment platforms, and / or sub-advised funds, wrap products, etc. Seeks new opportunities, and provides information about investment performance, philosophy, and asset allocation.
  • Monitors domestic and international economic and political trends for potential impact on the fundamentals of issuers, industries, and portfolios.
  • Reviews academic literature and maintains knowledge and understanding of the market / industry.
  • Evaluates alternate third-party data sources, models, or software.
  • Presents research results to internal and external clients.
  • Provides written and verbal research reports to Portfolio Managers for communication to clients.
  • Operates at a group / enterprise-wide level and serves as a senior specialist resource across BMO.
  • Influences how teams / groups work together.
  • Applies expertise and thinks creatively to address unique or ambiguous situations and to find solutions to multiple, interdependent, complex problems.
  • Communicates abstract concepts in simple terms.
  • Fosters strong internal and external networks and works with and across multiple teams to achieve business objectives.
  • Anticipates trends and responds by implementing appropriate changes.

Qualifications :

  • 15+ years of relevant experience and post-secondary degree in finance, economics or business or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • CFA designation is strongly preferred; MBA is also beneficial.
  • Advanced understanding of the functional area and the market of the Canadian investment industry
  • Expert analytical and interpretive skills; capable of sourcing and identifying pertinent factors from large volumes of information.
  • Broad product experience, spanning mutual funds, ETFs, alternative investments and institutional offerings.
  • a strong understanding of client needs and expectations and a proven track record of building and leading high-performance teams
  • Expert organizational skills; strong attention to detail and risk.
  • Sound grasp of key concepts of portfolio management theory, as well as the ability to analyze, interpret and communicate portfolio performance and investment characteristics
  • Experience working with industry tools such as Morningstar Direct, FactSet, StyleResearch, and EVestment

Compensation and Benefits :

$165,800.00 - $248,700.00

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure.

Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group's expected target for the first year in this position.

BMO Financial Group's total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
