Reportingto the Manager, Nîsôhkamâtotân Programs and Services, the Indigenous LiaisonSpecialist is responsible for implementing and providing services, resourcesand activities designed to increase the recruitment and retention rates of FirstNation, Métis, and Inuit students.
This position will support the programmingand activities of the Nîsôhkamâtotân Centre in order to promote studentacademic and personal success.
Major areas of responsibility include studentadvising, supporting programs such as the Prospective Aboriginal Youth (PAY)Program, Indigenous Student Ambassador Program, and Elder Services, and contributingto Indigenous awareness at NAIT.
All Centre staff are responsible forestablishing and supporting a warm, friendly and welcoming environment for allstudents and staff, as well as visitors to the Nîsôhkamâtotân Centre.
KeyResponsibilities :
Focus on making the student feel welcome andcomfortable within the Nîsôhkamâtotân Centre and NAIT. The goal is to providesupport services to assist students in promoting individual growth and managingeducational and personal concerns.
Advise and assist prospective and current students byproviding information about NAIT programs, application processes, fundingopportunities, and scholarship and bursary opportunities.
Represent the Nîsôhkamâtotân Centre on panels andaward selection committees.
Foster community and engagement including thecoordination and promotion of Nîsôhkamâtotân Centre events, Elder Services, andIndigenous cultural awareness programs.
Support the Indigenous Recruitment Specialist inachieving First Nation, Métis, and Inuit recruitment goals by initiating,coordinating and participating in organized presentations, tours and specialevents both on and off campus to professionally promote NAIT and NAIT's Indigenoussupport services and programs.
Build relationships with various NAIT departments andconnect students with supports and services available outside of theNîsôhkamâtotân Centre.
Support the Prospective Aboriginal Youth (PAY) andIndigenous Student Ambassador Programs.
Administration duties including coverage of thewelcome desk in the Nîsôhkamâtotân Centre when required.
Skills& Abilities :
Thorough knowledge of NAIT’s academic processes,programs and services.
Well-developed research skills.
Cultural competency, especially knowledge of andexperience working in Indigenous communities.
Knowledge of student-related computer applications(Ex. Student portal).
Knowledge of record-keeping practices, electronic andmanual.
Highly developed interpersonal communication skills.
Highly developed written communication skills.
Organizational and scheduling skills.
Facilitation skills.
Qualifications :
Related degree such as Native Studies orsimilar.
Experience in direct involvement with front-lineeducational advising, employment counseling, assessment and case management,career advising and / or placement.
Preference will be given to candidates withdirect experience working with the Indigenous communities as well assignificant knowledge of Indigenous culture and language.
Equivalencies may be considered.
Physically able to lift and carry supplies asrequired.
Valid Driver’s License.
Applicants witheducation credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentialsevaluated by World Education Services or the International QualificationsAssessment Service (IQAS).
Remuneration : $55,138.46- $72,519.72 CW1 CW2 annually,plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification Administrative OfficerI).
Thisposition is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE)Collective Agreement.
