Position Summary

The successful candidate will provide writing support (digital and / or in person) to all NIC students. This position will include providing some backfill for the Learning Commons Coordinator position, i.

e. liaising with peer tutors and the Math Support faculty (2.5 hrs per week). The candidate will be mainly responsible to ensure appropriate coverage in Writing Support (15 hrs per week) to meet student needs as well as ensure accessibility of appointment times for students.

The successful candidate will provide writing support to NIC students at the Comox Valley and Campbell River campuses. This position also includes providing backfill for the Learning Commons Coordinator position.

This position is responsible for ensuring there is appropriate coverage to meet student needs, as well as accessibility of times for students.

This position will also include some promotion of the services available through in-class visits and other contact with students and instructors.

  • Interpersonal Effectiveness. Duties & Responsibilities - Provide online, one-on-one or small group writing support to students;
  • Support students in understanding and interpreting assignment instructions and expectations;
  • Employ appropriate critical reading skills to effectively and efficiently identify and distinguish between higher and lower order concerns in the primary genres of academic writing in post-secondary courses;
  • Balance the learners’ expressed needs, the assignment instruction criteria, and the tutor’s perceptions of the writer’s learning needs;
  • Provide tutoring input that is feasible for learners to follow;
  • Search for, select, and provide appropriate resources from online academic writing sites when appropriate;
  • Responsible for requesting time sheets from peer tutors, checking and signing off on them, and forwarding them on to the supervisor for processing and payment. ;
  • Responsible for coordinating and directing math support;
  • Respond to a variety of student writing, including accented non-standard English and basic writing, as well as upper level academic writing;
  • Judge when a referral is needed (when a request is beyond one’s knowledge and ability framework) and effectively refer learners to appropriate resources;
  • Employ ethical standards and practices which encourage academic honesty and learner independence / responsibility;
  • Maintain tutor role boundaries;
  • Identify the type of help students require and tailor tutoring to skills needed by students; Required Education & Experience - Master’s degree in English or equivalent language-based training;
  • Applicants must have experience giving formative feedback on student writing;
  • BC teaching certificate or Provincial Instructors diploma is highly desirable. Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities - Excellent written and oral communication skills, time management, interpersonal, and organization skills;
  • Base tutoring responses in current writing centre theory and writing tutoring best practices;
  • Demonstrate the ability to address both higher order and lower order concerns in student writing at the academic level;
  • Demonstrate the ability to deal effectively with a wide variety of student writing at the foundational, academic and upper academic levels;
  • Productively engage with accented non-standard English writing, basic writing, and upper level academic writing;
  • Adapt tutoring strategies and input to respond appropriately to differing learner needs;
  • Model and demonstrate effective writing strategies;
  • High-level critical reading and response skills;
  • Training and experience in supporting students from a variety of social and cultural backgrounds;
  • Flexibility and creativity in addressing student needs;
  • Work independently and online with a diverse and widely-dispersed team;
  • Skillfully and comfortably use standard computer and internet technology;
  • Ability to discuss and promote writing support programs to students and faculty.
