Principal Exploration Geoscientist - North America
Barrick is recruiting a Principal Exploration Geoscientist to join our North America Exploration team.
Role
The Principal Exploration Geoscientist is responsible for driving discovery through the application and integration of geoscience data, providing technical oversight and leadership including application of best practices, academic research and innovation strategies / technologies.
Will provide subject matter expert-level input to assist country Exploration teams to continuously improve the quality of gold and copper projects within Barrick's portfolio while ensuring that all projects have the potential to meet internal geologic and economic filters.
Principal duties and responsibilities
The Principal Exploration Geoscientist must demonstrate proficiency in the following :
- Maintain a safe working environment for all employees, contractors and the public
- Contribute to material discoveries through innovative problem-solving including development and application of leading-edge analysis, tools, and interpretation
- Perform the role of subject matter expert for gold and copper systems and ensure best practices are implemented
- Supervise a small team of Geoscience Specialists and Data Management Professionals to deliver support for, and assist in, driving discovery
- Lead academic engagement and research support within the Region while ensuring alignment with Global objectives and maximizing benefit from said activities to Barrick's exploration efforts
- Motivate programs for funding and effectively report the results and implications
- Assist in the development of exploration models for gold and copper deposits and target / project generation activities
- Forward planning to ensure efficient and timely coordination of resources required to conduct exploration activities
- Proactive mentorship of Geo- and Data- Scientists to progress their technical and professional development
- Preparation of annual programs and budgets
- Perform principal-level duties and responsibilities in other regions on an as needed basis
Other Responsibilities include :
- Maintain a professional work environment and encourage technical excellence from team
- Generate ideas and create effective solutions leveraging data and / or development of discovery tools to identify new targets
- Ensure the effective collection and interpretation of exploration data, including QA / QC protocols
- Implement approved and motivated programs, bringing targets to decision points in a cost effective and timely manner
- Partner with academic institutions or innovative technology companies and effectively test, and if deemed appropriate, integrate discovery tools into the exploration workflow
- Proactively monitor 3rd party properties in conjunction with the New Exploration Opportunities leads; initiate reviews as warranted
Specific functional duties include :
- Assist country Exploration teams in the coordination of peer reviews of all exploration programs to ensure consistency and appropriate rating and ranking of project across the portfolio
- Coordinate timely and accurate compilation of exploration results and review project progress
- Contribute to the preparation and presentation of quarterly reviews
- Preparation of material as required for inclusion in company presentations
- Frequent domestic and international travel required
Qualifications
The successful applicant will fulfill the following education and skill level pre-requisites :
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, community and environment
- Masters of Sciences or PhD in Geoscience from a recognized institution is preferred
- Greater than 15 years of applicable experience in exploration for porphyry copper gold deposits, epithermal, orogenic and Carlin-type deposits in variety of geologic environments
- Demonstrated track record of success
- Self-motivated and discovery driven
- Continued professional development and technical training
- Demonstrated competence in ArcGIS and 3D modeling software
- Advanced geological / geochemical / geophysical interpretive and integration skills
- Expert level understanding and recognition of mineralization models and geological processes
- Firm understanding of technical aspects of geophysical techniques and current best practices as applied to mineral exploration
- Demonstrated ability to work within a high performing team
