What Is the Opportunity?

The Government Relations and Senior Counsel role works closely with the CEO and General Counsel, Canada, as well as the business teams, to develop, execute and lead Travelers government relations priorities, strategies, and lobbying activities while reporting to and interacting with senior management.

What Will You Do?

Participate in industry trade associations (including the IBC) to represent company interests in legislative, regulatory and industry forums.

Influence such associations to focus on company priorities and allocate their resources accordingly. Coordinate Travelers Canada participation in key trade association committees and groups

Coordinate, participate in meetings with various levels of government to influence positive reform or regulation or legislative developments to support company initiatives or business needs.

Prepares position papers and briefs for senior management in advance

  • Lead the drafting of letters and other submissions from Travelers Canada on impactful legislative and regulatory proposals at both the provincial and federal levels, and lead Travelers Canada comments on same for IBC submissions
  • Advise the General Counsel, CEO, and other business leaders of impending changes and initiatives in regulatory and legislative environments and the potential impact of these changes on company operations, policies and positions
  • Managing government relations resources (, GR firms), directing activities, coordinating meetings, and updates, and securing engagement of such resources as needed.
  • Participates actively in developing company positions on public policy issues and in choosing appropriate strategies to achieve targeted results.
  • Maintains positive relationship with IBC, and provincial government organizations, and regulators, including FSRA, the AIRB, and other federal and provincial organizations to promote company perspective on issues of concern to those organizations
  • Assists in coordinating with Corporate Communications and Law Departments where government relations activities require engagement with internal units.
  • Lead, or otherwise participate in, compliance and other projects and working groups formed as a result of new laws or regulations.
  • Provides day to day legal advice and support to senior management as part of the Travelers Canada Legal and Compliance team.
  • Identify, monitor, and provide updates on case law, legislative / regulatory developments, and other legal trends.
  • Proactively identifies and communicates risk to internal and / or external customers and provides recommendations on how to mitigate that risk.
  • Collaborate effectively with the business as needed to achieve business goals and initiatives, including by independently building and maintaining strong senior client relationships.
  • Drafts, negotiates, and executes legal documents.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • Proven leadership and management experience.
  • Exceptional ability to think strategically and apply critical thinking skills.
  • Expert communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal.
  • High level of tact and diplomacy.
  • Expert knowledge of provincial and federal regulatory and legislative arena.
  • Knowledgeable of insurance industry (including personal automobile insurance).
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of management.
  • Ability to interact effectively with external contacts in local, provincial and federal political and regulatory arenas.
  • Ability to understand and synthesize complex financial and business strategy information and convey it to key internal and external decision-makers in a simple, persuasive, and easily comprehensible way.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant laws, legislative proposals, regulations and environments impacting corporate interests and operations.
  • In-depth knowledge of regulatory and legislative processes in key provinces where we have significant writings. Familiarity with key people controlling such processes.
  • Experience establishing strong internal and external coalitions and networks.
  • Develops a high degree of trust through demonstrated personal integrity and ethics.
  • Experience or interest in corporate secretarial matters

What is a Must Have?

Law degree required.
