Job Description :

The Interpreter’s primary responsibility is to provide high quality, visual communication for students in a post-secondary setting.

The individual will interpret classroom lectures, course- related activities, campus events, or other assignments as directed by Accessibility Services.

Adequate preparation, maintaining professional boundaries, and ongoing professional development are critical to the position.

Assignments vary according to the type of communication system needed, the technical or unique nature of the subject matter, vocabulary, lecture / class structure and content, the rate of the speaker’s delivery, the need for the student to participate in the instructional setting, and the number of deaf or hard of hearing students being served simultaneously.

Qualifications Required :

Education & Experience

  • Completion of Grade 12 and graduation from a recognized Interpreter Training Program (ITP).
  • Four (4) years of recent related experience interpreting in American Sign Language (ASL) and / or oral interpretation and English in an educational setting.
  • Post-Secondary Sign Language Screen preferred (applies to sign language assignments).
  • Completion of a post-secondary certificate, diploma, or degree, preferred.
  • Experience working within an educational team and interpreting in a teamed setting .
  • An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.
  • Membership in the Westcoast Association of Visual Language Interpreters (WAVLI) required.

Skills & Abilities

  • Bilingual in ASL and English and bicultural (an understanding of deaf culture).
  • Demonstrates skill in a wide spectrum of ASL / English vocabulary choices to match student need.
  • Ability to provide linguistic match with the student’s need in ASL or Contact sign (Signed English).
  • Ability to provide clear articulation congruently with nonverbal support techniques when appropriate (applies to oral interpretation).
  • Ability to quickly establish effective working relationships with students and members of the educational team.
  • Ability to adhere to the College’s guidelines on providing interpreting services.
  • Ability to adapt to changing situations.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and complete prep work in advance of assignments.
  • Ability to manage a busy and sometimes complex schedule with multiple assignments.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills with the capacity to work harmoniously with others.
  • An addition of 20.8% in Lieu of benefits is included based on hours worked
  • This position receives a hard-to-recruit stipend of $4.12 / hour. This stipend shall remain in effect until a new Collective Agreement is in place.
