Please note this role will work in a hybrid environment. The successful candidate must be located near a Canadian Blood Services site, strong preference will be for Ottawa - 1800 Alta Vista Drive OR Toronto - 67 College Street , and will be working a mixture of on-site and off-site work based on the parameters for our operations to meet the needs of our donors, our staff and our communities.

Currently, employees are expected to have an in-person presence for at least 40% of their work time. This requirement may vary depending upon circumstances.

About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular full-time Director, Diversity, Equity and inclusion to join our dynamic Inclusion, Sustainability and Engagement team .

The Inclusion Sustainability and Engagement team works to ensure Canadian Blood Services is a leader in inclusion, sustainability and engagement, best positioning us to be prepared for the ever changing present and future.

It stewards natural intersections between our social impact and our purpose identifying and removing barriers to inclusion and belonging within Canada’s Lifeline.

In this role, you will ensure oversight of all corporate activities intended to create a more inclusive, equitable and diverse culture at Canadian Blood Services.

Through a combination of direct program accountability, education and training, internal and external partnerships, and through the provision of solid and well-timed advice, you will oversee the delivery of the organization’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategy and Reconciliation Action Plan.

You will also provide vision, leadership, and counsel on matters of diversity, equity, reconciliation, and inclusion and collaborate across functions to create a welcoming and respectful environment embracing diversity as a core organizational competency and promote a culture of inclusion and equity.

You will be the central coordinator of Canadian Blood Services’ DEI strategy and Reconciliation Action Plan, and will develop initiatives to support this strategy and, in doing so, achieve the measurable outcomes for diversity, equity and inclusion it contains.

You will work collaboratively with all components of Canadian Blood Services to create processes and advance initiatives to identify and remove systemic barriers within the organization, its programs, and operations.

Formula for success

  • Consistent with the CBS DEI Strategy, you will identify, develop, and cultivate projects, activities, strategies, and approaches to advance an inclusive and equitable culture that result in organizational equity outcomes.
  • You will be responsible for establishing DEI and indigenization as an embedded and operationalized core value throughout all aspects of CBS and its organizational practices.
  • Concentrating on your proven record of successfully engaging diverse groups of stakeholders, you will provide direction and advice to the VP, Inclusion Sustainability and Engagement and other senior leaders on high impact, equity-seeking strategies, and opportunities.
  • Using your excellent interpersonal and communication skills, you will participate in and lead initiatives and projects at all levels, dealing with DEI issues affecting the organization.
  • Focusing on your abilities to build relationships with key subject matter experts and influencers, you will collaborate and partner with the CBS Stakeholder Engagement function to ensure approaches to stakeholder engagement are inclusive and equitable.
  • Leveraging your proven record of successfully communicating and educating broad range of individuals, on difficult and complex issues, you will participate in DEI and reconciliation working groups, communities of interest, and community initiatives and events that enhance the understanding, alignment, and advancement of best practices.
  • Harnessing your demonstrated knowledge and expertise, you will advance the CBS brand and reputation, serving as a dedicated advocate for DEI and reconciliation within and outside the organization in matters that further the DEI Strategy and Reconciliation Action Plan, and which respond to emerging issues.
  • Utilizing your strong analytical abilities and adherence to tight deadlines, you will develop appropriate metrics and reporting approaches to measure performance and success around DEI and reconciliation programs and initiatives, and to ensure the organization succeeds in delivering on its agreed-upon outcome measures.
  • Focusing on your continuous growth mindset, you will maintain an awareness of new and emerging trends and seek opportunities to advance organizational thinking aligning to best practices and developing trends.
  • Drawing on your demonstrated ability to lead and work collaboratively, you will develop a strong team and internal network who support the development and implementation of frameworks, policies, and initiatives that foster a culture of excellence, innovation, collaboration, engagement, and accountability for DEI and reconciliation initiatives.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Desired education and skills

  • Completion of a university degree in a related subject (for example social science, sociology, cultural studies, anthropology, women’s studies, Indigenous studies, social work, human resources management) is required, an advanced degree is preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive, related experience, including policy development, strategy definition, and experience leading large-scale change within the DEI field.
  • Expert level knowledge of anti-oppression, equity, diversity, anti-racism, accessibility / UDL and inclusion frameworks including the ability to proactively identify challenges and opportunities related to these areas of expertise to support future planning and strategy.
  • Experience working on large-scale change projects.
  • Must possess deep experience in the work and demonstrated experience advancing diversity and inclusion initiatives within a complex organization.
  • Must possess administrative and programmatic experience, including strategic planning and budget management.
  • Lived experience of encountering and addressing complex equity, diversity and human rights issues is strongly preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

  • This role will work in a hybrid environment with requirements to be onsite at Canadian Blood Services location 40% of the time / 2 days of the week.
  • You may be required to travel up to 25% for this role, and as required.
