Who We Are:

Appletree Medical Group is Canada’s most progressive multi-disciplinary medical organization. We support and manage the practices of Ontario’s leading family physicians and specialists, including those delivering innovative virtual healthcare services.

For more than two decades, we have partnered with talented, driven individuals who share our mission to improve access to high-quality community healthcare across Canada. As we continue to grow, our journey now extends beyond borders - supporting communities around the world as they work to rebuild and expand access to care.

We are only just getting started. Discover how you can join our exceptional team and play a role in shaping the future of community healthcare.

Why You Should Join Us:

At Appletree, we offer a wide range of career opportunities for individuals seeking meaningful experience in the healthcare industry. Our roles are well suited for medical school hopefuls, those exploring a career in healthcare, foreign medical graduates, individuals still discovering their career path, and experienced professionals eager to make a positive impact in their community.

We are committed to supporting our team members with opportunities for growth, flexible work hours, access to premium healthcare services for you and your family, a flexible benefits plan, and hands-on experience that helps jumpstart careers while fostering ongoing professional development.

The Opportunity:

The International Medical Assistant (IMA) role is designed for International Medical Graduates (IMGs) or Internationally Trained Physicians (ITPs) who are actively pursuing medical licensure in North America. This position is ideal for individuals seeking hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of the Canadian healthcare system.

IMAs work under the direct supervision of a physician, functioning as a clinical technician and assistant, and serving as the physician’s “eyes and ears” in the examination room.

Compensation & Career Development:
Hourly Wage: $18.10 per hour, with additional performance-based bonuses tied to individual services.

Training Requirements: Successful completion of all required training milestones, exams, and certifications within the first three (3) weeks of employment.

Performance Review:
Following a three (3)-month probationary period, IMAs are eligible for a formal performance review.

Specialty Training Opportunities: Upon successful completion of the performance review, IMAs may be eligible to train in one or more specialty programs, including but not limited to:

  • Diabetes Program.
  • Travel Medicine.
  • Allergy Testing.
  • Foot Care.
  • Wellbaby Program.

Benefits:

  • Comprehensive benefits package including vision, dental, medical, and paramedical services.
  • Benefits eligibility begins after six (6) months of continuous full-time employment.

What You'll Do:

International Medical Assistants (IMAs) are fully trained and responsible for supporting clinical and administrative operations to ensure high-quality, efficient patient care.

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate closely with physicians and other healthcare professionals to deliver comprehensive patient care.
  • Assist with patient triage, obtain medical histories, and perform limited physical examinations as appropriate.
  • Accompany healthcare providers during patient visits and document encounters in real time.
  • Accurately document patient histories, assessments, and treatment plans in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Prepare, maintain, and update patient charts to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Assist with order entry, including prescriptions, referrals, and diagnostic tests, as directed by the provider.
  • Support healthcare providers during medical procedures, including wound care, suture removal, specimen collection, and minor surgical procedures.
  • Provide post-procedure and post-operative care instructions to patients.
  • For female IMAs: perform Pap examinations under supervision, including specimen collection and documentation, as permitted.

Administrative & Operational Responsibilities:

  • Register patients accurately, including reception duties, scheduling, and payment collection.
  • Schedule patient appointments, diagnostic tests, and procedures to optimize clinic workflow and minimize wait times.
  • Coordinate referrals to specialists and follow up on patient care plans.
  • Apply approved clinical scripts, scenarios, and protocols consistently while using the EMR system.
  • Ensure exam rooms are fully stocked and maintain appropriate inventory levels through daily checks.
  • Maintain a clean, quiet, and safe clinical environment by cleaning and sanitizing exam rooms, common areas, foyers, and restrooms.
  • Perform basic IT troubleshooting as needed to support clinic operations.

Teamwork & Professional Development:

  • Collaborate effectively with physicians, managers, medical assistants, and administrative staff to ensure seamless clinic operations.
  • Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as required to support patient care and clinic needs.

What We're Looking For:

  • Medical degree completed.
  • Successful completion of the MCCQE Part I preferred.
  • Previous residency interviews in Canada or the United States considered an asset.
  • Recent clinical medical experience within the past five (5) years considered an asset.
  • Excellent English communication skills (verbal, written, reading, and comprehension) to effectively interact with patients, families, and healthcare professionals; additional languages are an asset.
  • Permanent eligibility to work in Canada (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident), or possession of a valid work permit extending beyond 12 months (no sponsorship available).
  • Minimum typing speed of 40 words per minute for data entry.
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology, clinical procedures, and patient care protocols.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems and related clinical software.
  • Basic IT skills and familiarity with computer systems.
  • Professional Skills & Attributes
  • Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Professional, reliable, and committed, with a positive attitude and enthusiasm.
  • Respectful, collaborative, and able to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities, patient needs, and clinic environments.
  • Willingness to work varied shifts, including days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Ability to work across multiple clinic or office locations within the city.
  • Passion for continuous learning, training, and professional development.
  • Prior experience in a clinical administrative role is considered an asset.
