We are currently seeking an Economist / Head of Research to provide global macro-economic insight to support our commercial dry bulk shipping team and Fednav’s Family Office Investments team.

The ideal candidate will have a deep interest in thinking critically and creatively about macro trends, especially related to the international shipping industry, more specifically to maritime dry bulk shipping and commodities markets to assist with commercial strategy development.

Location : Montreal (Canada)

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING THE ROLE

The successful candidate is responsible for providing support to :

Commercial (dry bulk shipping)

  • Conducting research in the geo-political and macro-economical environment impacting the dry bulk shipping and commodities markets
  • Formulating Fednav’s view on the long-term supply and demand developments including generating scenarios through data analytics and dynamic modelling
  • Conduct literature and data review to provide interpretation and explanation of economic data to support decision making
  • Interpreting both short and long-term changes to the macro world and determine impact to the dry bulk and commodities markets
  • Building and managing relationships with global providers of research and supply / demand data
  • Continuously supporting the business with information that may impact business decisions and results

Investments (Family Office)

  • Enhancing and maintaining an economic framework to capture and analyze global economies, conduct research, effectively share key findings and insights with the Investment team
  • Developing, and maintaining a framework by which economic developments and macro themes can be identified and monitored.

Your analysis will play an integral role, helping inform investment decisions and providing our team with key insights

WHAT YOU BRING THE PERSON

The ideal candidate has :

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Economics or any other related discipline.
  • A minimum of three year's experience in a similar Economist role or as an Economy Analyst covering macro-economics, global trading, and commodities markets
  • Strong knowledge of financial tools such as Bloomberg, Refinitiv Eikon, Macrobond, etc
  • Strong problem-solving skills including the ability to analyze and interpret complicated research data and to formulate business recommendations and investment convictions
  • Identifying and evaluating the implications of major trends and developments in the commodity and shipping markets as well as changing market conditions and inputs for business opportunities
  • The ability to create new insights, devise novel approaches through research information using empirical and / or modelling skills
  • Strong communication skills including the ability to make effective, well-structured presentations adapted to the intended audience
  • Proven ability to work both independently as well as collaborate with team members across functions and at all levels through an open, engaging, and collaborative style
  • Confidence working in an international multi-continent organization with diverse cultures
  • high degree of reliability, organization, and accountability, to meet deliverable requirements
  • high level of integrity, sound judgement, working with confidential information
  • Fluency in English is required
