Associate Director / Senior Analyst (Total Portfolio Management)

UBC Investment Management Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of British Columbia, providing professional investment management for the UBC Endowment Fund, Staff Pension Plan and other UBC-related funds.

The funds are invested globally across all major public and private asset classes and in aggregate value exceed $6.2 billion.

UBC Investment Management is seeking an experienced new team member to enhance its Total Portfolio Management function to support growth in assets under management and increasing the sophistication of our investment implementation process.

About the Role

This role will report to the Director, Total Portfolio Management and is responsible for helping to implement UBC Investment Management’s investment framework, including managing asset allocation, investment strategy, liquidity management, beta exposure management, and trading all managed funds to achieve fund objectives.

Its primary responsibilities include :

Total Portfolio Management

  • Monitoring and managing total portfolio exposures, including asset allocation, foreign currency and liquidity levels;
  • Conducting analysis on total portfolio management methodologies and techniques as well as strategic asset mix reviews;
  • Contributing to the rebalancing process to ensure portfolios are at their desired exposures;
  • Assisting with periodic updates to fund investment policies;
  • Conducting performance benchmarking analysis at the total fund and asset class level;
  • Overseeing regular portfolio performance attribution analysis, assessing contributors and detractors of absolute and relative returns at the total fund, investment program, and individual strategy level;
  • Overseeing day-to-day fund liquidity management, ensuring efficient use of fund liquidity to facilitate ongoing cash flow requirements;
  • Conducting ongoing analysis on UBC Investment Management’s Investment Programs, contributing to portfolio construction development through quantitative and qualitative research on economic, regional and sector developments;
  • Monitoring financial market developments on an ongoing basis, reporting to internal team and using insights in day-to-day activities;
  • Contributing to strategic projects advancing UBC Investment Management’s investment process and systems

Reporting & Communications

  • Regular reporting to UBC Investment Management’s internal investment team on total portfolio exposures, asset allocation, and rebalancing trade requirements;
  • Contributing to regular and ad-hoc investment reporting requirements for UBC Investment Management’s Board and client portfolios;
  • Contributing to annual Total Portfolio Management Program reviews

Qualified candidates should possess the following :

  • 5-10 years of relevant experience working with multi-asset investment portfolios, asset allocation strategies and investment risk management.
  • Preference for candidates with experience at an endowment, foundation or pension fund in a Total Portfolio Management or Investment Strategy Research capacity;
  • Strong understanding of theories and practices in financial markets;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of common Total Portfolio Management practices, including rebalancing approaches, liquidity management, foreign currency management and beta management techniques;
  • Strong background in quantitative and statistical research methods, capable of in-depth, critical analysis;
  • Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to communicate complex financial subjects to stakeholders in a clear and concise manner;
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Mathematics, Economics or similar quantitative discipline.
  • The following would be considered an asset :
  • Experience with a broad range of investment asset classes, including a strong understanding of how private market investments impact total portfolio liquidity and risk;
  • Experience with derivative and futures strategies to manage total portfolio exposures;
  • Experience in trading fixed income, equity or derivative instruments;
  • Understanding of private asset pacing model approaches;
  • Experience managing investments under a Reference Portfolio framework;
  • Advanced financial or business degrees (MBA, M.Fin, CFA, CAIA, FRM);
  • Experience using Bloomberg, Refinitiv and other investment analytical tools;

Total compensation will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience and qualifications but is expected to have a base salary in the range of C$100,000 C$150,000.
