Job Summary :
The Academic Advising Centre invites applications for a full-time, temporary Academic Advisor for either the duration of a leave, or a four-month term, whichever comes sooner.
Reporting to the Associate Director of the Advising Centre, the Academic Advisor will deliver holistic, integrated advising to current students.
The duties include assessment interviews, program planning, and creating individual academic success plans.
The Advisor assists students to support career goals with strong academic planning; and collaborates on and participates in student orientations and other student engagement events and will develop and instruct workshops on relevant topics.
- The advisor determines the special advising needs of certain sub-populations of students and develops programming and strategies to support these students;
- collaborates with other academic support areas to deliver supports that meet the needs of the students. The advisor will maintain currency on program and curriculum changes;
ensure the currency and relevancy of advising practices; liaise with external and internal stakeholders; and promote the philosophy of post-secondary education.
They will act as a student liaison and advocate as well as act as a resource for instructional faculty and administration with respect to the development of programs, admissions, and policies.
This is a multi-campus position, and the candidate must be available to work some evenings.
Qualifications :
- A Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution is required with at least two years’ experience in student academic advising, or related experience in student affairs, in a post-secondary environment.
- Demonstrated collaborative, inclusive, relational approach to working with others
- Demonstrated strength in written and oral communication, including attention to the audience
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills, creativity, resourcefulness
- Experience in the development and delivery of presentations
- Evidence of strong interpersonal skills, including teambuilding
- Evidence of ongoing professional development relevant to the position
- Demonstrated knowledge of the needs of students, including subpopulations within
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs is required; familiarity with Banner and Achieve Appointment Manager software is an asset
- Evidence of a strong commitment to the ethical and professional standards (FOIPPA regulations) of providing service to students
