Your role :

CBC Vancouver is looking for a video journalist with excellent journalistic judgement and proven visual storytelling skills.

If you are the right person for this role, you are independent, resourceful and driven by curiosity. You are comfortable talking to anyone and you seek out a range of perspectives in your coverage.

You make cold calls daily and maintain relationships with a long list of contacts. You bring newsy and original ideas to the table and you know how to use investigative tools.

The successful candidate will also be a creative thinker who brings original ideas and treatments to the newsroom, and have demonstrated skills in shooting and editing news for streaming and social media platforms, including TikTok and Youtube.

You will understand the diverse and changing population in British Columbia, and the importance of reflecting all our communities in our content.

Reporting to the Executive Producer of News you will operate as part of the daily story hub news team to research, gather, package content for CBC digital, television, streaming and social platforms, although you’ll file stories for radio and online, too.

Under the general direction of an Executive Producer or delegate, you will operate independently, or as part of a program unit to research, gather, package and present material for all platforms.

Work is governed by CBC journalistic and programming policies and standards. Advice and guidance are regularly available but initiative and independent judgment are essential.

There may be opportunities to coordinate the work of others.

At CBC Vancouver we work as one station. Although you will work in the newsroom, you will be expected to work closely with the radio current affairs programs to ensure that the best of your work is shared widely with the audience.

Key Tasks :

Writes for a variety of platforms including digital, social media, radio and television

Gathers compelling, high-quality video, photographs, and audio on scene in a variety of situations

Monitors developing news through a variety of sources

Arranges and conducts interviews

Develops and maintains relationships with a wide variety of key sources

Edits material for use on all platforms

Stays on top of the latest social media tools to find contacts and story idea

Decides which elements should be included in a story, their order, length and sequence, as well as the method of transition from one element to another.

Prepares, aligns, sets up and operates various camera equipment, ensuring optimal video, audio and technical quality under prevailing conditions.

Lights the subject or scene and composes program visual material using a hand-held camera. Ensures that the material produced meets the technical and aesthetic requirements for editing.

Edits recorded items on appropriate / available editing systems.

Prepares and writes scripts, continuity and headlines.

Reports the story, either on camera or in voice-over form.

Has a valid B.C. driver’s licence and drives a motor vehicle in the performance of the job

  • As assigned or required, performs any of the following tasks : attend daily story meetings and contribute story ideas; perform final edit;
  • operate other studio equipment; maintain a basic library of stock footage and archival material; perform routine minor maintenance on cameras, editing and associated equipment;

in the field, carry out emergency repairs to camera and / or equipment.

We're looking for candidates with the following :

Proven skills shooting and editing video to tell compelling stories

Performance skills - Strong presentation style and a good voice for broadcast

A minimum of five years of experience in broadcast journalism

Demonstrated understanding of the key issues facing Metro Vancouver and British Columbia.

Deep understanding of the best practices for social media tools

Track record of breaking news and quick turnarounds

Excellent critical thinking skills

A proven commitment to delivering information on digital platforms

Proven ability to generate compelling story ideas and knowledgeable contacts

Proven conversational writing style

Ability to travel

Experience working independently as well as part of a team

Ability to work flexible hours in a high-pressure, tight deadline environment, often in unexpected overtime situations.

Ability to respond to breaking news situations quickly and accurately

Deep understanding of multi-platform coverage

Demonstrated range of visual storytelling techniques that extends beyond the traditional television pak
