Chief Officer

Overview : Head of the deck department, responsible for the safe and efficient planning & conduct of cargo and ballast handling operations.

Member of the bridge team and officer of the watch.

Key tasks & responsibilities and any other duties and responsibilities as enunciated in the company Safety Management System (SMS) or requested by the Master.

The Chief Officer is responsible to the Master for :

  • Acting as the Deck department team leader in an emergency / crisis situation response situation
  • Maintaining the upkeep of the hull, deck fixtures, fittings, crew accommodation areas (including toilets, washrooms, galley / mess), forecastles Bosun’s storerooms etc.
  • Administering the deck inventories exercising cost control, and ordering of goods as needed
  • Maintaining an up to date record of deck maintenance
  • Monitoring all situations which may result from an environmental pollution incident and conducting appropriate preventative measures
  • Keeping a safe navigational watch as instructed by the Master
  • Ensuring that all safety equipment is maintained in a good operational mode and regularly tested
  • When nominated by the master as the ship safety officer ensure that the crew maintains safe working practices
  • Acting as ship security officer along with the associated duties as per the ship security plan
  • Taking charge of the mooring party
  • Recording incidents and dangerous occurrences
  • Ensuring that the crew wear their PPE and sponsor safe working practices at all times
  • Responsible for the upkeep of the ship safety and training record book
  • Ensuring that the crew is familiar with MOHs (Marine Occupational Health and Safety Regulation) as promulgated by labor Canada

Prerequisites

  • Be a Canadian citizen
  • Possess a valid Canadian passport with an expiry date over six (6) months from the time of joining
  • Possess a valid Marine Medical Care certificate as per the Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) V1 / 4 Possess a valid Transport Canada medical with a validity of six (6) months from the time of joining)
  • Possess the required certification for the position held as per STCW and the Manila 2010 amendments for a vessel operating in unlimited waters
  • Possess a valid supervisor of oil transfer
  • Possess a designated security duties certificate as per STCW regulation A-VI / 6
  • Obtain and hold a Secret level security clearance. It is imperative to hold such security clearance as required by the Provision of Services contract between Federal Fleet Services and Her Majesty the Queen in right of Canada, represented by the Minister of Public Services and Procurement Canada.
