Westcoast Women in Engineering, Science and Technology (WWEST) along with integrative STEM Team Advancing Networks of Diversity (iSTAND), is seeking a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) youth outreach activity coordinator to co-design, and facilitate upcoming in-person school and / or community-based events.
This position requires the successful candidate to be confident in independently coordinating school visit and / or community events, and assist in designing and implementing STEM activities for youth in grades K-12.
Potential other duties may include supporting development of newsletters, social media posts, and support with planning STEM camps.
Suitable applicants would have knowledge / passion / interest in science and / or education.
Organizational Status :
The overall goal of the WWEST / iSTAND British Columbia and Yukon program is to support intersectionality and diversity, and to provide equitable and inclusive learning and working environments for underrepresented persons in science and engineering.
The WWEST program is grounded within the themes of Inclusion, Collaboration, and Innovation. Through classroom visits, Intergenerational Events, on campus event and social media WWEST works towards the goal of building connections and interest in STEM retention for years to come.
iSTAND creates a network to recruit and support underrepresented persons in STEM, and facilitates organizational change through the development of programs that build equity, diversity, and inclusion in STEM enterprises.
iSTAND strives to foster an atmosphere that enables individuals within organizations to unleash their potential and to shape a more diverse mindset that welcomes inclusivity and respect, into their personal and professional life.
Each individual can be equipped with the tools necessary to challenge the status quo, create change and nurture inclusive spaces.
Major Responsibilities :
- Collaborate on organization, and facilitation of Intergenerational events in communities across BC / Yukon
- Assist in developing engaging and unique STEM lessons linked to BC Education curriculum, and facilitate such lessons in K 12 classrooms across BC / Yukon
- Coordinate with team members, the organization / purchase of classroom / event supplies as required
- Support developing a network within the STEM communityPromotes program activities through posts on various platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTokSupports team in collecting, maintaining, organizing metrics and data to be used for program reportingShare in creating and presenting volunteer opportunities through public booth or information sessionCollaborate on creating newsletters to be distributed through local school division networks and program contacts
- Seasonal and when feasible co-organize / co-facilitate Winter, March and / or Summer Youth Camps
- Participate in team meetings and collaborate with team members
- Perform other related duties as required in the development and promotion of WWEST / iSTAND programming
Consequence of Error / Judgement :
Errors or lapses in judgment in the multifaceted role described, could lead to a range of consequences. These may include scheduling conflicts and miscommunication in event coordination, disruptions in classroom activities, shortages of supplies, damage to the organization's online reputation, lower attendance at events, financial discrepancies, parental dissatisfaction and most seriously injury or illness to a child.
Such errors may not only impact the immediate success of these initiatives but also hinder the organization's overall mission and standing in the provincial STEM community.
The individual in this role must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and proactive to mitigate these potential consequences and ensure the seamless execution of diverse responsibilities.
Supervision Received :
Works under the supervision of the WWEST Program Manager and under the Direction of Dr. Jennifer Jakobi.
Supervision Given :
Upon occasion, supervision in the form of supporting volunteers may be required.
Education / Work Experience :
Minimum
- High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Teachers Certification, or equivalent education and experience (minimum completion of undergrad degree with preference to those in a STEM related field) preferred
- Experience with youth is an asset
- Clean Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record check
- Full COVID vaccination is required
- Driver’s license and own transportation is required

- Ability to teach in a fast-paced environment with the support of teachers / school staff
- Physically able to care for children of all ages and abilities
- Adaptability and flexibility in task execution
- Excellent organizational skills
- Attention to detail in both written, and verbal communication
- Basic computer literacy
- Understanding of BC Educational programing is an asset
