BA Blacktop , a subsidiary of VINCI Construction, was founded in the Province of British Columbia in 1956. The goal of our program is to help develop high-potential Civil Engineer candidates to reach their goal of securing a full-time position after graduation. We provide students with hands-on experience that helps them understand their role in the technical world. Our program gives students an opportunity to apply their knowledge to practical problem-solving situations. BA Blacktop’s program offers a strong path for Civil Engineer students to gain valuable work experience with an emphasis on fieldwork experience.

What You'll Be Doing

As a Co-Op Student, you will do the following tasks :

Assisting Foreman :

  • Site Safety orientations
  • Actively working on-site with the crew
  • Organizing tasks
  • Daily Records and Journal
  • Testing scheduling and recording
  • Layout and Survey
  • Support to the foreman

Working with Estimating Team :

  • Drawings take-offs
  • Request for Information redaction
  • Quantity measuring and tracking
  • Progress Estimate preparation
  • Contract & Subcontract Agreements Reviews
  • Shadowing Superintendent and Project Manager :

  • Traffic Management Plans
  • Non-conformance reports
  • Schedule update
  • Cost & Budget review
  • Site meetings
  • Cost integration
  • Daily project communication
  • Extra Work Order Consolidation
  • Skills and Abilities that You'll Develop

  • Understanding of road construction and related activities
  • Understanding of the QMP and the testing requirements for roadway
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (e.g., memos, reports, discussions)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Microsoft Project)
  • Proficiency in BlueBeam and AutoCAD as well as other related software
  • QA, QC training
  • Estimating experience
  • Tracking of quantities
  • Qualifications and Knowledge that You Should Aspire to

  • Enrolled in a Degree program in Civil Engineering
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management or Related Field
  • Previous work experience in Civil Engineering is an asset
  • Excellent attention to detail, good judgment, and clear communication skills
  • Knowledgeable with Specifications and requirements in roadway construction (MMCD, MoTi, and Supplementary Municipal Specifications)
  • PMP designation
  • Gold Seal Certification
