Position Summary

The Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences seeks a registered psychologist to provide psychological services in the Forensic Psychiatric Rehabilitation Unit.

You will work with an interprofessional team to provide evidence-based clinical assessments (psychoeducation and diagnostic clarification) and treatment (short-term, evidence based stabilization).

Position responsibilities may include providing consultation to interprofessional team members, supervising students, as well as initiating research projects (e.

g., quality improvement and program evaluation initiatives).

The position being recruited for is within the Forensics Program, which consists of a Secure Forensic Service, which consists of 3 units providing assessment, treatment and rehabilitation services for patients who are ordered by the courts or the Ontario Review Board (ORB) and who require accommodation at a higher security level.

The General Forensic Service, which consists of 3 units providing assessment, treatment and rehabilitation services for patients who are ordered by courts or Ontario Review Board (ORB) and who require accommodation at a lower security level.

The Forensic Outpatient Service provides assessment, treatment and rehabilitation services for patients who are ordered by the courts or the Ontario Review Board (ORB) who reside in the community.

This position will also encompass time consulting and providing community engagement related to the Forensic Specialty Dual Diagnosis Program.

Qualifications Required and Preferred

The successful candidate will have a Doctoral level degree in psychology, preferably with 3 years clinical and / or research experience in the field of severe and persistent mental illness, combined with being registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario.

Candidates registered with a certificate authorizing autonomous OR supervised practice with the College of Psychologists of Ontario will be considered.)

The successful candidate will have demonstrated skills to work with an interprofessional team, particularly those in transition.

Experience providing, teaching and supervising short-term evidence-based psychotherapies and contributing to evidence-based clinical management is key.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic team environment, are essential.

  • The successful candidate will have demonstrated skills to work with an interdisciplinary team to provide evidence-based clinical management, assessment and therapy of patients with a serious mental illness who have come in contact with the law.
  • A demonstrated interest and aptitude for academic activities (e.g., teaching psychology interns) and the ability to conduct independent research relevant to the mandate of the Forensic Program are key.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic team environment are essential.
  • Implements and models the Recovery philosophy in all aspects of care as a Recovery champion
  • Proven excellent interpersonal skills and effective oral / written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge / experience with computers
  • Meditech experience preferred
