JOB DESCRIPTION

General Manager

Location : Vancouver, British Columbia

Job Type : Full time

Schedule : Monday to Friday and occasional evening and / or weekend

Reporting Structure : Reports to the Senior Regional Operations Leader

Support / Collaboration Structure : Working and collaborating directly with leaders from various business units : Finance, Talent, Medical Operations and Facilities.

VCA Canada Vancouver Animal Emergency & Referral Centre is welcoming an experienced General Manager to join our team. In this role the successful candidate will provide strategic leadership, mentorship and management to our Vancouver Animal Emergency & Referral Centre.

This role works in partnership with hospital leadership to ensure the hospital is appropriately staffed, providing the highest quality of veterinary care, and associate and client experience.

Qualifications :

Proven leader who can build trust and respect with the hospital team, peers and our support office.

Strong mediator and problem solver.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, active listening.

Ability to read and interpret documents including contracts.

Demonstrated ability and exposure to financial planning.

Ability to teach, delegate effectively and give direction to others.

Proficient computer and typing skills.

5+ years management experience with 10+ direct reports.

5+ years of operational leadership.

Responsibilities :

The General Manager is responsible for the overall performance of the hospital, including all reporting and project deadlines.

Advocating programs and initiatives; recruiting programs, vendor programs, medical operations programs, community programs and other initiatives

Building accurate budgets and leading the hospital to achieve results.

Identifying and implementing strategic initiatives and being a strong partner and communicator with hospital associates, clients, local referring DVMs, the VCA Support Office and our industry partners.

Provide a visible presence in the hospital with leaders and the team to foster a cohesive culture.

Ensures open communication, and promotes a sense of unity and accountability.

Administrative :

Develop and enforce operational policies with hospital leadership.

Review and approve equipment assessments and business cases.

Maintain confidentiality and ensure adherence to hospital policies.

Oversee report preparation, scheduling, and inventory management.

Ensure accurate invoicing and monitor financial reports.

Manage accounts receivable, hospital credit policies, and invoice approvals.

Optimize hospital operations, including staffing, schedules, and maintenance.

Financial Performance & Reporting :

Develop budgets and business plans with hospital leaders.

Review and resolve financial discrepancies; meet benchmarks.

Lead leadership meetings on financials and initiatives.

Analyze costs and revenues; provide monthly reports to the Senior Regional Operations Director.

Regularly review and adjust budget notes.

Client Service & Marketing :

Enhance client experience and promote the hospital services through social media

Engage in local educational events and handle client concerns.

Promote VCA Canada’s image and ensure high standards in hospital appearance.

Participate as a representative for VCA during conference exhibitor events and / or college events.

Human Resources :

Recruit, coach, and manage high-performance teams.

Oversee performance reviews, salary management, and disciplinary actions.

Ensure compliance with HR processes, local regulations and wage and hour laws.

Facilitate training and development opportunities.

Manage scheduling, time off, and associate recognition.

Navigate complex situations and support positive outcomes

Communication & Strategic Planning

Implement organizational improvements and manage resources.

Maintain vendor relationships and maximize support levels.

Prepare business plans and conduct regular reviews.

Mentor clinic leadership and liaise with the VCA Canada support team.

Skills and Abilities

Leadership courage - able to say what needs to be said even when it is difficult

Working Conditions : General working conditions can include standing or sitting for extended periods of time. Additionally, the associate may be required to lift up to 40 lbs.

The associate may also be exposed to the following : potentially fractious patients, emotionally stressful situations, unpleasant odours, pet bites / scratches, loud noises, animal feces, and contagious diseases.

Compensation : $90,000 to $100,000 annual salary; bonus and benefits package dependant on level of experience and other factors.
