The Mechanical Estimator will be responsible for the accurate, timely preparation of full-cost estimates for projects, including materials and labour. The Mechanical Estimator is tasked with preparing and maintaining a list of suppliers, contractors, and subcontractors. This individual analyzes blueprints, specifications, proposals, and other documentation in the preparation of accurate, profitable mechanical estimating, budgeting time, cost, and labor estimates for products, projects, or services.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Prepare and/or coordinate the preparation of full cost estimates on conceptual, design-build or general tender work, up to any size and complexity.
  • Prepare materials, labour and equipment cost estimations according to proposals, plans, estimates and specifications; without supervision, including project closings.
  • Reviews data to determine material and labor requirements & prepares itemized lists.
  • Perform high volume of price change notices.
  • Computes cost factors and prepares estimates used for management purposes such as planning, organizing, and scheduling work; preparing bids; selecting vendors or subcontractors; and determining cost effectiveness.
  • Conducts special studies to develop and establish standard hour and related cost data or effect cost reductions.
  • Consults with clients, vendors, or other individuals to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues.
  • Prepare and maintain a list of suppliers, contractors and sub-trades and negotiate with them as necessary to obtain most competitive and profitable prices.
  • Interfaces with other individuals in the organization to obtain support and commitment to the cost estimates.
  • Organizes and manages a centralized cost estimating database and a formal process to support cost estimating to ensure historical data is utilized.
  • Analyzes completed projects to compare estimated costs to actual costs and determine the reason for any discrepancies.
  • Provides improvement recommendations to cost estimating procedures to reduce future discrepancies between estimated and actual costs.
  • Identifies cost trends to assist management in cost reduction and process improvement efforts.
  • All other duties as assigned to meet Company objectives.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university, with a minimum of five years estimating experience in the Mechanical Contracting industry, and practical knowledge of field requirements and restrictions; OR
  • Mechanical License with a minimum of five years estimating experience and/or training; OR
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience; and successful completion of estimating program in post-secondary education environment.
  • Prior experience with Accubid is a requirement.

  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
