Job description

Are you a Piping Engineer with adequate experience in the filed? This 12-months role with chances of extension can be a good fit for you.

The Generation Stations Mechanical Engineering Balance of Plant team has an exciting opportunity for an Intermediate Fire Protection Design Engineer based out of office in Burnaby. The team supports hydroelectric generation facilities through capital projects, condition assessments, asset management initiatives, operational support, and engineering design services.

This role will focus on the design, analysis, and implementation of fire protection systems for hydroelectric generating stations and associated infrastructure. Projects range from equipment upgrades and lifecycle replacements to large multidisciplinary capital programs involving generation assets across the province.

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:

Lead the design and development of fire protection piping systems for hydroelectric generating stations, including sprinkler systems, special hazard protection systems, water supply systems, and associated piping networks.
Act as a Professional of Record, preparing and sealing engineering designs, drawings, calculations, and reports.
Perform fire protection engineering assessments, field investigations, site assessments, hazard analyses, code compliance reviews, and risk-based evaluations.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including mechanical, electrical, civil, structural, protection and controls, operations, maintenance, construction management, and project management.
Develop conceptual, preliminary, and detailed engineering designs from project initiation through construction and commissioning.
Prepare design calculations, engineering reports, technical specifications, construction packages, and procurement support documentation.
Review and accept the work of external consultants and contractors on behalf of company.
Support project planning, cost estimating, scheduling, construction support, commissioning, and turnover activities.
Perform water supply evaluations, hydraulic calculations, and system performance analyses.
Develop practical and cost-effective solutions that support operational requirements, safety objectives, and asset management strategies.
Continuously seek opportunities to improve engineering practices, standards, design tools, and work processes.
Be comfortable travelling to and working at hydroelectric generating stations throughout British Columbia.


Qualifications
Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC).
A minimum 5 years of relevant engineering experience.
Demonstrated experience in the design and implementation of piping design in industrial, utility, power generation, mining, oil and gas, heavy industrial, or similar facilities.
Experience executing engineering work from conceptual design through construction, commissioning, and turnover.
Experience using piping design software.
An awareness of fire protection engineering principles, codes, standards, and industry best practices.

Technical Knowledge

Demonstrated knowledge of and experience applying any of the following codes:

ASME B31.1 – Power Piping
ASME B31.3 – Process Piping
NFPA 13 – Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems.
NFPA 15 – Standard for Water Spray Fixed Systems for Fire Protection
NFPA 20 – Standard for the Installation of Stationary Pumps for Fire Protection
Additional knowledge of the following codes are considered an asset:

NFPA 850 – Recommended Practice for Fire Protection for Electric Generating Plants and High Voltage Direct Current Converter Stations.
NFPA 22 – Standard for Water Tanks for Private Fire Protection
NFPA 25 – Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems
Applicable British Columbia regulatory requirements and building, fire, and electrical codes.

Software Experience

Experience with one or more of the following design and engineering tools:

AutoCAD
AutoCAD Plant 3D
Navisworks
Autodesk ReCap
AutoSPRINK, HydraCAD, ELITE, HASS, or equivalent

Preference may be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in:

Preferred Experience

Preference will be given to candidates with:

3D modelling and coordination, including laser scanning and point-cloud data integration into 3D models.
Fire protection engineering experience within utility, power generation, hydroelectric, or other heavy industrial facilities.
Multidisciplinary project delivery within operating industrial facilities, including field support for construction, commissioning, testing, and integrated systems verification activities.
Experience as a hands-on designer working directly with piping software.
Experience acting as Engineer of Record or Professional of Record.
Knowledge of performance-based fire protection design methodologies.
Experience with condition assessments, lifecycle planning, and asset management of fire protection systems.

• Experience interpreting engineering drawings, technical specifications, maintenance records, and project documentation.

• Experience coordinating work between contractors, operations, engineering, maintenance, and project stakeholders.

• Experience with work management systems, maintenance planning processes, or asset management programs.

• Experience reviewing contractor invoices, validating completed work, and supporting budget or cost-control processes.

• Experience supporting project documentation, turnover packages, records management, and regulatory compliance requirements

Technical Knowledge and Skills

• Working knowledge of utility, industrial, or construction practices, including contractor management, maintenance execution, and project coordination.

• Ability to understand technical work scopes and evaluate contractor documentation, work progress, schedule impacts, and completion requirements.

• Demonstrated understanding of engineering drawings, specifications, record drawings, and document control processes.

• Proficiency with SAP

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint.

• Experience developing reports, dashboards, performance metrics, and process improvements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation.

• Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) designation.

• Experience within the electric utility industry, including generation, transmission, substations, or system operations.

• Experience supporting NERC compliance programs, regulatory audits, or operational compliance requirements.

• Experience managing multiple contractors and technical projects across geographically dispersed work locations.

The successful candidate will possess sufficient technical knowledge and operational understanding to act as the primary liaison between contractors, engineering/asset management, project management and operations. The incumbent must be capable of understanding technical work scopes, reviewing contractor deliverables, coordinating maintenance and project activities, identifying issues requiring escalation, and ensuring contractor work is executed in accordance with company standards and operational requirements.
