Job Details

The Durham District School Board acknowledges that many Indigenous Nations have longstanding relationships, both historic and modern, with the territories upon which our school board and schools are located. Assists the Manager in the overall day-to-day custodial operations and management of the Durham District School Board's (DDSB) facilities. Ensures a safe, clean and sanitary environment for all staff, students, and the public. Directs, oversees and monitors the activities of union and non-union employees within the allocated budget.

Accountabilities

  • MANAGE AND MENTOR THE TEAM: Plan, organize, direct and oversee the work of the Custodial Supervisors. Motivate staff and promote and maintain professional working relationships and communications among staff, management and union. Provide direction, guidance and advice regarding the collaborative interaction between Custodial Supervisors and their direct reports, school administration and other relevant stakeholders. Mentor the team in building and maintaining effective relationships with individuals across the organization, and both internal and external stakeholders.
  • ENSURE SAFETY AND SECURITY: Plan and oversee activities relating to the Security portfolio and ensure the installation, maintenance, and upgrading of security systems, cameras, recording devices, door access systems, and all equipment associated with the Boards SAFE WELCOME program. Supervise monitoring station, staff, and on-call security personnel to ensure monitoring of all Life Safety and intruder alarms and the appropriate responses to such incidents. Act as the lead contact for after hours' emergencies.
  • MANAGE UNION /LABOUR ISSUES: Ensure that supervision of union staff is compliant with the Collective Agreement. Administer the various activities of disciplinary action, including suspension, mediation, arbitration and termination, and ensure issues and situations are handled in compliance with the Collective Agreement and with consideration to past practices. Document and communicate issues, conflicts and concerns relating to staffing and employee relations and promote and maintain effective relationships with the Local Union, and Union executive to find solutions/resolve issues. Organize, plan and schedule staffing requirements, in accordance with the Collective Agreement, and adhering to budgets. Monitor daily and long-term absences to plan for appropriate staff coverage for all DDSB facilities.
  • BUDGET: Prepare, develop, monitor and report on RFPs, quotes, budgets and goals for a variety of programs, including the winter grounds care, summer grounds care, security systems, equipment and equipment upgrades. Develop and administer adequate financial and resource allocation controls and measures.
  • LIAISE AND COORDINATE: Liaise and collaborate with various and diverse contacts, including Health and Safety, Community Use of Schools, Maintenance, Major Projects and Early Years to ensure that Custodial Services and programs are coordinated efficiently and effectively.
  • ENSURE QUALITY CONTROL: Provide planned, systematic quality assurance oversight to ensure the quality of occupied, closed or vacant facilities meet the DDSB standards. Contribute to quality management and site inspections; visit sites and partner with Custodial Supervisors for timely follow-up.


Knowledge and Skills

  • Supervisory skills including a demonstrated ability to effectively motivate and manage union & non-union staff
  • Knowledge of the current Collective Agreement and past practices
  • Exceptional written and oral skills to document & communicate contentious issues
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and standards
  • Ability to work well within the approved budget
  • Ability to use specialized equipment/technology
  • Ability to collect, record and maintain accurate, detailed, relevant and logical notes, files and information.


Education

  • Completion of secondary school or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.



Experience

  • A minimum of 10 years experience as a Lead/Secondary School Custodian preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years experience as a Custodial Supervisor preferred.



Additional Information

  • This is a 35 hour per week, permanent position.
  • Provide a current Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC) upon hire.
