Job description

Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Director, Student Life & Housing, the Healthy Trades Liaison is responsible for the development, delivery, and evaluation of targeted wellness initiatives that support the mental health, physical wellbeing, and overall success of students in the trades and technical programs across North Island College. The role leads the implementation of the Healthy Trades initiative, a specialized, embedded program designed to address the unique challenges of trades and technical program education, including intensive program schedules, physically demanding work, and barriers to accessing support. The Liaison delivers low-barrier, trades-relevant supports through classroom engagement, integrated programming, community partnerships, and data-informed program design. In collaboration with the Student Life & Outreach Liaison, the Healthy Trades Liaison contributes to a coordinated service delivery model that supports continuity across outreach, early intervention and Student Life programming. Working collaboratively with NIC faculty and staff, and community partners, the Healthy Trades Liaison advances a culture of wellness within trades and technical program environments, contributing to increased help-seeking, reduced stigma, improved physical wellness, and enhanced student retention and success. The work aligns with institutional priorities, including BUILD 2026, the CARE2 Plan, and NIC’s commitments to equity, Indigenization, and student success. Position Competencies - Job Knowledge

- Communication & Interpersonal Skills Duties & Responsibilities 1. Trades-Focused Program Delivery and Outreach
  • Deliver in-class presentations, orientations, and follow-up outreach within trades and technical programs to increase awareness of supports and normalize help-seeking
  • Provide embedded, low-barrier wellness programming aligned with trades schedules and learning environments
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with trades faculty, instructors, and program areas, and collaborate with Student Life and student services departments to support coordinated service delivery, including shared service coverage across outreach, Early Assist, and Student Life functions as required.
  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver or support the delivery of trades-specific health and wellness initiatives, including mental health, substance education, education related to injury prevention and healthy lifestyles
2. Physical Wellness and Injury Prevention Programming
  • Coordinate and promote access to physical wellness supports, including recreation partnerships and therapeutic services where available
  • Develop initiatives that support injury prevention, stress management, and sustainable work practices
  • Respond to student-identified needs for practical, applicable wellness supports
3. Student Engagement and Leadership
  • Facilitate peer engagement opportunities and flexible student leadership models appropriate to schedules in the trades and technical programs
  • Design low-barrier, high-impact events and activities that support connection and community within trades and technical program environments
  • Engage students in feedback processes to inform ongoing program development
4. Early Intervention and Support Integration
  • Support and promote Early Assist referrals within trades programs
  • Identify emerging student needs and collaborate with internal student support services (Counselling, DALS, etc.) to coordinate timely supports
  • Contribute to early intervention strategies, particularly for apprentices and dual credit students
5. Community and Industry Partnerships
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with community organizations and industry stakeholders to support student wellness in the trades and technical programs
  • Coordinate collaborative programming with partners (e.g., health services, workforce organizations, cultural supports)
  • Support connections between student wellness and workforce readiness
6. Program Evaluation, Reporting, and Funding Accountability
  • Collect, analyze, and report on program data, student engagement, and outcomes
  • Administer student surveys and feedback mechanisms to inform program improvement
  • Prepare regular and ad hoc reports, presentations, and updates for internal and external stakeholders
  • Monitor and track program expenditures and assist in the administration of assigned budgets, ensuring alignment with program objectives and funding requirements
  • Ensure program delivery aligns with institutional and sector requirements and strategic priorities
7. Communication and Knowledge Sharing
  • Develop targeted communications and promotional materials relevant to trades students
  • Participate in institutional and sector-level knowledge sharing, including presentations and conferences
  • Contribute to the development of resources and practices that support trades student wellbeing across the institution
8. Administration and Other Duties
  • Participate in relevant committees and working groups
  • Provides cross-functional support within the Student Life team, including contributing to service continuity and shared coverage across outreach, early intervention, and Student Life programming during peak periods, staff absences, or emergent student needs.

Required Education & Experience 1. Bachelor’s degree in a related field such as health promotion, public health, social work, counselling, or education2. Minimum 3 years of recent and relevant experience providing health and wellbeing education services in a post-secondary institution or health-related setting, including experience working with trades or applied learning environments3. Experience working with and learning from First Nations communities, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ2+ communities will be considered an asset Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities 1. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, while collaborating effectively across departments to support coordinated service delivery within trades and technical programs.2. Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage and build trust with students, faculty, instructors, and community partners.3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with culturally and socially diverse audiences, including adapting messaging to trades learning environments.4. Strong presentation and facilitation skills, with the ability to deliver engaging classroom-based and informal outreach sessions to groups of varying sizes.5. Ability to develop and deliver accessible, low-barrier programming, responsive to the needs of students in intensive, structured learning environments (e.g., trades and apprenticeship programs).6. Strong organizational, time management, and project coordination skills, including the ability to manage multiple initiatives, track progress, and meet reporting requirements.7. Demonstrated ability to interpret and use data (e.g., surveys, participation metrics) to inform program development, evaluation, and continuous improvement.8. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multi-tasked environment, adapting to changing priorities and emerging student needs.9. Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital communication tools, with the ability to use data tracking systems and student service platforms.10. Ability to work flexible hours and travel between NIC campuses, as required to support program delivery across regions.11. Possession of a valid BC driver’s license.
