Position Overview

Safety Managers at Kiewit are integral in ensuring Nobody Gets Hurt . We hire people passionate about safety who will create, support, and audit our program to reinforce our commitment.

Working closely with project teams, Safety Managers develop and implement protocols, conduct training programs, and monitor compliance with regulations and company policies.

This role will be based on a construction project and will be involved in both safety management and field oversight to ensure safety for staff and craft employees, subcontractors, and consultants supporting the project.

District Overview & Location

Kiewit Energy Canada is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. We are a major industrial contractor that work on projects that involve construction of oil & gas facilities such as oil sands processing, including steam assisted gravity drainage facilities, upgrading & refining, midstream facilities, power & co-generation, terminal projects (ex.

LNG, LPG, etc.), and major mine developments. We also have a Modular Yard facility in Edmonton, Alberta. Our engineering branch is a leading-edge division that offers innovative engineering services for our current projects and new pursuits in Canada.

Our design services group are based in Calgary and Houston offering expertise in process, piping, mechanical, electrical, and civil / structural disciplines.

Responsibilities

Safety Planning and Implementation :

  • Develop and implement comprehensive safety plans and procedures specific to energy projects, as well as others on an as-needed basis
  • Ensure that safety protocols are aligned with regulatory requirements, industry best practices, and Kiewit's safety standards.
  • Conduct regular site inspections to identify potential hazards and assess safety risks.

Training and Education :

  • Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees and subcontractors.
  • Provide guidance on safety-related certifications and qualifications required for specific job roles.
  • Promote a culture of safety awareness and accountability across all levels of the organization.

Incident Management and Investigation :

  • Lead investigations into safety incidents, near misses, and accidents.
  • Analyze root causes of incidents and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Ensure timely reporting of all safety incidents in accordance with company policies and regulatory requirements.

Regulatory Compliance :

  • Stay informed about changes in safety regulations and standards applicable to energy construction
  • Coordinate with regulatory authorities during inspections and audits.

Safety Performance Monitoring :

  • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure safety performance on projects.
  • Conduct regular assessments and audits to evaluate adherence to safety standards and identify areas for improvement.
  • Provide timely and accurate safety reports to project management and senior leadership.

Qualifications

  • Education in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field. Years of experience will be considered in lieu.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in construction safety management, ideally with a focus on energy construction projects.

Demonstrated ability to manage all aspects of a safety program on projects of increasing complexity.

  • Professional certification in safety management (ie. NCSO) preferred.
  • CPR / First Aid, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification and OSHA / MSHA instructor certifications are preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety and other relevant safety standards.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment; ability to freely access all points of a construction site in wide-ranging climates and environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Good attention to detail, with the ability to recognize discrepancies.
  • Strong work ethic - Willing to do what it takes to get the job done.
  • Willingness to travel and relocate to project sites as needed.
