Job description

Spare is transforming the future of public transit. Founded in Vancouver, Spare builds the software platform that helps cities deliver smarter, more accessible transportation. Their technology powers on demand microtransit and modern paratransit systems, enabling transit agencies to provide reliable mobility to the communities that depend on it most.

Today, Spare partners with 200+ cities across four continents, supporting tens of thousands of rides each day. Following a recent $42M Series B led by Inovia Capital, the company is entering its next phase of growth and is looking for a Vice President, People to help scale the organization and strengthen its high-performance culture.

The Opportunity

This is a pivotal leadership role at a company with strong momentum and meaningful impact.

As Vice President, People, you will partner closely with the founders and executive team to define and scale Spare’s people strategy. You will build the systems, structures, and leadership practices that enable the company to attract exceptional talent, maintain high performance, and support teams as they grow.

You will oversee the full People function—from performance management and compensation to engagement, leadership development, and workforce planning—while building the infrastructure needed for a fast-growing global technology company.

For the right leader, this is an opportunity to shape the people foundation of a mission-driven company working to improve mobility for millions of riders worldwide.

What You’ll Do

Build and Scale the People Strategy

Own Spare’s end-to-end People strategy across performance management, compensation, engagement, learning and development, and workforce planning. Establish clear frameworks for career progression, promotions, and performance expectations across the organization. Ensure People practices evolve with the company’s growth and remain aligned with best-in-class HR and People Operations practices.

Create Scalable Systems and Infrastructure

Lead the development of scalable People systems and processes including HRIS, performance reviews, onboarding, and compensation structures. Build data-informed processes that increase transparency and improve the employee and manager experience. Establish consistent operating rhythms such as feedback cycles, calibration sessions, and leadership coaching.

Strengthen a High-Performance Culture

Champion Spare’s feedback-driven, high-expectation culture through systems, leadership behaviours, and clear standards. Partner with founders and executives on organizational design, succession planning, and talent strategy. Ensure high-performing employees are continuously challenged, supported, and retained.

Lead and Grow the People Team

Build and develop a high-performing People and Talent team that can scale alongside the business. Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, and impact within the function. Support the continued development of Spare’s collaborative, ego-free workplace culture.

Influence Across the Organization

Communicate clearly with leadership, managers, and employees on People priorities and initiatives. Build alignment across departments to support the company’s growth and evolving organizational needs. Present People insights and metrics to the executive team and board to inform strategic decisions.

What You Bring

Significant experience leading People or HR functions within a high-growth technology company or startup environment. Deep expertise in people operations, performance management, compensation design, and HR systems. A track record of building and scaling high-performing People teams. Strong executive presence with the ability to influence founders, senior leaders, and managers. Comfort operating in a fast-paced, feedback-driven environment with high expectations. A thoughtful, systems-oriented approach to building scalable organizational infrastructure.

Why Spare

Spare’s mission is rooted in improving mobility and access for communities around the world. The company’s technology helps cities deliver transportation that is more sustainable, equitable, and efficient.

Spare’s culture is ambitious and collaborative. The team is driven by a shared belief that meaningful work requires high standards, open feedback, and mutual respect.

For leaders who want to do some of the most meaningful work of their careers while helping build a global technology company, Spare offers a rare opportunity.

Vancouver, BC (Hybrid – minimum three days in office)
