Overview:
EHN is seeking an Assistant Controller to support hands on accounting operations and month end close activities across a multi-site organization. This role is execution focused and best suited to an earlier career Canadian CPA who enjoys detailed accounting work and ownership of close activities. The role is not intended for candidates whose experience is primarily supervisory or audit only.
The Assistant Controller will play a key role in ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and scalable accounting processes, while actively participating in day to day execution.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting Operations & Close
- Own and execute monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities.
- Prepare and post journal entries and complete balance sheet reconciliations with full supporting documentation.
- Maintain direct ownership of close tasks, including accruals, prepaids, and fixed assets.
- Support consolidation and reporting for a multi site organization.
Technical Accounting & Controls
- Apply ASPE in a practical manner to day to day accounting issues and financial reporting.
- Prepare and support financial statements under ASPE.
- Research accounting issues, document conclusions, and implement solutions through journal entries and close adjustments.
- Support maintenance of internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures.
Audit & Compliance
- Prepare audit schedules and working papers.
- Respond directly to external auditor requests and support year end audit execution.
- Maintain audit ready files and documentation throughout the year.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Support accounting systems and process improvements, including standardization and automation.
- Partner with Finance and IT to improve data accuracy and reporting efficiency.
Team Support & Collaboration
- Work hands on alongside the accounting team with a focus on execution rather than delegation.
- Partner with the Controller and Finance team to resolve accounting issues.
- Support ad hoc analysis and special projects as required.
Qualifications & Experience
- Canadian CPA designation.
- 6–10 years of progressive accounting experience.
- Big 4 audit experience is strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding and practical experience preparing financial statements under ASPE, financial close processes, and internal controls.
- Post audit industry experience, ideally in a Senior Financial Accountant or similar role.
- Experience in multi-entity or multi-site organizations preferred.
- NetSuite experience is strongly preferred.
- Advanced Excel skills including PowerQuery and strong attention to detail.
Role Fit
- Highly hands on and detail oriented.
- Comfortable preparing journal entries, reconciliations, and working papers.
- Interested in execution and ownership rather than people management.
- Best suited to an earlier career CPA rather than a senior oversight focused profile.
- Willingness and ability to be highly hands on while supporting a growing organization.
What Success Looks Like
- Timely, accurate financial closes with strong balance sheet integrity.
- Well documented accounting processes and clear audit trails.
- Improved efficiency and consistency across accounting activities.
