Job description

Position Summary

BCIT’s School of Construction and the Environment is seeking a temporary, full-time (1.0 FTE) Maintenance Mechanic. This position responds to work orders and trouble calls for the repair, installation and maintenance of the School’s machinery and equipment, including their electrical components. Troubleshoots issues and determines repair approach and solutions. Coordinates and/or carries out plans for and prioritizes emergency maintenance, repairs and replacements to machinery for the School. Duties & Responsibilities DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reviews and responds to a variety of work requests and trouble calls, determining and taking corrective action to fix or replace machinery and equipment; Assesses urgency, priority, community/public safety while determining and establishing repair priority and approach.
  • Troubleshoots problems on a wide variety of mechanical systems, machinery and equipment. The problems are sometimes difficult to identify, solutions are not standard, and many are emergency calls. Priorities are established by assessing the impact on property, public safety and course delivery needs.
  • Establishes priorities and requirements for the Preventative Maintenance (PM) Plan, including items that need to be inspected and maintained for regulatory reasons. Brings awareness, consults and proposes plans to Associate Dean(s) on replacement schedules for machinery.
  • Ensures an awareness of the updated maintenance and replacement schedules within the School and coordinates with Associate Deans and Instructors to ensure minimal disruption to instructional activities.
  • Conducts preventative maintenance on multiple, interconnected systems and according to maintenance plans; reviews daily schedules, conducts inspections, identifies deficiencies and takes corrective actions, including cleaning, inspecting, greasing, lubricating and replacing components.
  • As appropriate, manufactures components when sourcing of parts is no longer available on equipment is still in operation. Ensures they are properly constructed and to safety/manufacturers codes.
  • Identifies faulty or unsafe machinery or equipment, actioning safety protocols and practices to isolate safety risks. Escalates emergency repairs through conducting diagnosis, repairing machinery or arranging for building maintenance or external contractor support. Ensures risks are well identified and communicated.
  • Estimates labour and material costs for repairs, upgrade projects, including reviewing schematics, and Original Equipment Manufacturers (“OEM”) specifications; Compiles cost estimates and makes recommendations for improvements.
  • Communicates with individuals, including Department/Program Heads and Faculty from a variety of Department programs within BCIT and with external contractors brought in to work on mechanical, machinery and equipment. May involve working collaboratively with upset Department/Program Heads or Faculty to provide alternative solutions to problems, explaining the interrelation of complex systems and addressing concerns.
  • Plans, schedules and coordinates repair or replacement work with external parties and contractors. Engages with BCIT’s Building Maintenance teams when interconnections between building mechanical/electrical supply and machinery require coordination.
  • Maintains documentation on maintenance and repairs for the Department’s machinery, equipment and mechanical systems. Logs next repair schedule. Keeps records of information and instructions for machine use and related hazards current.
  • Remains current and up-to-date on advances and regulatory requirements for machinery, systems, equipment design/adaption, components/parts, technology, standards and codes. Maintains knowledge through communications with local suppliers, research, on-the-job procedures and practice, adapting older systems and maintaining certifications.
  • Facilitates plans for the upgrading, repair or replacement of mechanical systems, machinery and equipment. Engages Department Associate Deans, Managers and Faculty to discuss plans and proposals for upgrades or improvements and makes recommendations on repair or replacement approach, priorities, costs and options for decisions.
  • Prepares drawings, sketches, layout diagrams, and estimates for internal projects and work required.
  • Ensures supplies and inventory for maintaining and installing machinery and equipment is available when needed. Submits purchase orders to replenish and maintain supplies.
  • Reconciles purchase orders to purchase card transactions, ensuring there are no variances and the charges to the cards are appropriate, accurate and aligned with original purchase amounts.
  • Determines parts and equipment requirements. Sources components and replacements. Prepares work orders and purchase requisitions; Maintains work order records, records work performed and completes work control forms.
  • Maintains equipment, parts and supply records including packing slips, purchase receipts, and charge card statements.
  • Removes, installs and commissions machinery and equipment. Relocates machinery and equipment as needed. Assists others by lifting and carrying materials, and positioning items for repair or reassembly.
  • Records work logs capturing time worked on equipment/machinery, what was changed/repaired or replaced, and any other documentation to ensure work repairs are logged and captured accurately for future reference.
  • Provides technical information and recommendations to Program/Department Heads and Associate Deans with respect to upgrading equipment and implementing approved improvements. Advises and recommends either a repair or replace approach.
  • Keeps work areas and the maintenance shop in a clean and safe condition.
  • Coordinates the engagement of contractors for the department’s repair and installation needs. Brief them on the work needing to be performed. Ensures the work is completed according to the contract specifications.
  • Monitors that Contractors are adhering to BCIT-established safety standards and applicable codes, according to policies and practices.
  • Adheres to and promotes safety standards required by regulatory bodies, including but not limited to: WCB Regulations, WHMIS, equipment lock-out, fall protection, confined space, rigging and hoisting, and asbestos awareness practices.
  • May have supervising/training duties with helpers/apprentices.
  • Participates in Records Custodian training and remains current with record keeping practices, policies and procedures (both BCIT and FOIPOP).
  • Undertakes related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade for this position.

Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • A valid Trades Qualification or an Interprovincial Trades Ticket (Journey person status (Millwright) plus technical education and/or certifications in the relevant building trades industry.

License(s)/Certifications(s):

  • Valid driver’s licence


Experience:

  • Two (2) years general trades experience plus up to four (4) years current relevant experience in the building trades industry.


Software/Computer Application(s) and Expertise:

  • Basic computer training and experience is required.


Communication/Interpersonal Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to identify and communicate important information in a timely fashion
  • Ability to work effectively on a team with competing priorities.
  • Excellent internal and external customer service orientation.
  • Administrative Skills:
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a busy, demanding environment with changing priorities is essential.
  • Excellent organizational skills to be able to prioritize workload, repair schedules and work assignments
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and meet competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to troubleshoot machinery and mechanical issues with ease.
  • Solution focussed with proven problem solving skills
  • Ability to complete assignments as part of a team or work independently.
  • Ability to take proactive initiative to identify and mitigate repair issues.

  • Willingness to maintain current in the field or practice and learn on the job is essential.
