Reporting to the Fleet Manager, the Fleet Supervisor provides supervision and direction to a team of technicians who safely operate, repair, and maintain GFL Environmental owned commercial diesel and alternative fuel trucks, and heavy equipment to ensure its ability to operate safely.
The lead hand technician has a split of duties between planning, scheduling supervising and repair tasks.
Key Responsibilities :
- Oversee the daily planning and scheduling of all repair work to optimize productivity. Follow up on repairs being made, perform repairs as needed and appraise performance of shop personnel.
- Review of mechanical write-ups on equipment and coordinate repair schedule.
- Assist with inventory control system to ensure necessary equipment and part levels are maintained and purchases are within budget.
- Review and approve expenses that are within approval level; refer larger expenses or major repairs to Fleet Manager.
- Complete required record keeping associated with repairing vehicles, documenting parts usage, and accounting for repair times.
- Review, plan and schedule work as required.
- Mentor apprentice technicians and provide training to complete their apprenticeship program.
- Conduct daily shop huddles and fleet walks.
- Ensure shop equipment and tools in safe operating condition.
- Ensure the cleanliness of the maintenance shops through regular inspections and preventive maintenance programs.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements :
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Journeyman / Red Seal is preferred but not required.
- Experience in leading a team is desirable but not required.
- One (1) or more years of lead technician or supervisory experience
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of tools required to perform repairs and maintenance on commercial vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Ability to follow schedules, instructions, technical manuals and maintenance guidelines, and other procedures associated with the maintenance of company fleet assets.
- Experience using diagnostic software is preferred. Must be computer literate and willing and able to be trained in software systems.
- Ability to communicate effectively across various levels of the organization and communicate with customers and external vendors.
- Ability to be a self-starter capable of working effectively in a team environment or as an individual contributor.
- Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Working Conditions
The Technician must be able to work inside and / or outside in all different weather conditions including extreme cold and extreme heat.

- Moderate walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting, carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, grasping / gripping, and pushing / pulling.
- Work utilizing personal protective equipment, including hearing protection, safety-toed boot, utility gloves, reflective vest, hearing and eye protection, hard hat, etc.
- Work outside and inside, around moving objects, vehicles, and machinery with moving parts. Exposure to dampness and humidity, toxic chemicals, exhaust fumes, gasoline, and diesel fuel.
- Physically able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds, and push / pull up to 100 pounds.
