Unit Summary
Committed to patient-oriented care, Hamilton Health Sciences Pharmacy utilizes technician staff to their full scope of practice.
Our complement of technicians has moved beyond a supportive role and now are primarily responsible to perform medication distribution activities including but not limited to dispensing, compounding, product quality assurance, auditing and technology system maintenance.
Our pharmacy department provides pharmaceutical care, inpatient automated or manual unit dose prescription dispensing and centralized IV admixture systems (including TPN and chemotherapy compounding) in our 5 inpatient pharmacies, as well as a wide variety of ambulatory care services through our accredited retail pharmacies and ambulatory pharmacy.
Integrated across 6 sites, it also operates a regional drug information center. The department trains undergraduate pharmacy technician, undergraduate / postgraduate pharmacist students and provides a fully accredited pharmacist residency program
Position Summary
Reporting to the Corporate and Quality Pharmacy manager, the Pharmacy System Administrator (PSA) will provide primary technical support for pharmacy automation and informatics systems at all hospital sites, including but not limited to Swisslog robotics, Omnicell technologies, PakEdge and Abacus compounding equipment, and will support current and future technology implementation projects for HHS Pharmacy.
Responsible for investigating and resolving technical failures in partnership with internal IT and vendor resources, and partnering with IT / Clinical Informatics to ensure system communication across multiple interfaces.
The PSA will maintain and update multiple system settings to ensure all systems maintain alignment with the Hospital Information System (i.
e. EPIC), and to facilitate operational optimization, access and safety parameters. The PSA will participate in testing procedures for system upgrades and enhancements, and will communicate system changes to users and administrators.
The PSA will complete all required reconciliation tasks to ensure compliance with Accreditation Canada, Ontario College of Pharmacists and other applicable legislation, regulations and standards.
Reports for system optimization, utilization and diversion surveillance, quality assurance and auditing purposes will also be generated, and front line educational support to pharmacy staff and other staff is provided as required.
The PSA will also participate in various committees internal and external to Pharmacy related to Pharmacy systems, and will facilitate student education as required related to systems

Qualifications
1. Minimum 5 years related hospital pharmacy experience in acute care hospital setting, with an associated minimum 2 years of experience in informatics and / or automation primary support.
2. Demonstrated strong ability to use computers, word processing, spreadsheet and email systems and working knowledge of EPIC.
Ability to support Swisslog and / or Omnicell technologies preferred.
3. Strong analytical and problem solving skills, with experience in troubleshooting technology-related issues.
4. Ability to provide support to the pharmacy leadership team and to provide leadership to pharmacy technicians. Ability to provide support to other health care professionals related to pharmacy systems and technology.
5. Ability to follow specific instructions with a high degree of accuracy, with strict adherence to applicable legislative, Ontario College of Pharmacists and other professional standards and guidelines (including but not limited to OCP, NAPRA, USP, ISMP), and to support system standardization.
6. Strong understanding of pharmacy and medication systems legislation, standards and guidelines, and internal hospital systems, and demonstrated ability to apply standards to technology solutions.
7. Ability to perform the physical requirement of the position, including moderate to heavy lifting, pushing, and bending (equipment hardware maintenance).
8. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, teamwork, collaboration, organizational, and communication (written and verbal) skills.
9. Demonstrated initiative. Self-directed in seeking out pharmacy technology issues and finding constructive resolution options.
10. Demonstrated commitment to professional and personal development.
11. Demonstrated ability to co-ordinate with other departments to complete projects and audits.
12. Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload, and to manage stressful conditions.
Candidates must have completed the following requirements related to registration with the Ontario College of Pharmacists prior to the application to this posting.
No candidate will be successful to this position unless the candidate has completed all of the following :
- Completion of a recognized college level Pharmacy Technician Program
- Registration with the Ontario College of Pharmacists, in good standing and no restrictions in licensure
