Join the union that represents Ottawa’s municipal public service professionals!

The Civic Institute of Professional Personnel (CIPP) is looking for a full-time Organizer.

Who are we?

CIPP has been the union for professionals, working at the City of Ottawa and Ottawa Community Housing, for over 65 years.

CIPP represents the people who help to make Ottawa a great city.

Our members include public health nurses, engineers, business analysts, project managers, paramedics, and many other professionals working to deliver quality public services in our community.

What is the opportunity?

We are looking for an Organizer to join our small, highly collaborative team. Reporting to the Communication and Member Engagement Manager, the Organizer will work to increase and maintain active existing membership across the union.

You will increase members’ sense of ownership for their union, increase their understanding of the union’s role and increase member engagement in strategies that build union power.

You will use your organizing and communication skills to help members understand their role in the union and support them to connect with each other to build strength and momentum for the next round of bargaining.

You will implement the CIPP organizing model that emphasizes relationship-building for long-term member involvement in the union.

Examples include one-to-one conversations, small group training, ongoing two-way communication and support to member-driven organizing.

If you are passionate about organizing and social justice and enjoy a dynamic team environment, this is the opportunity for you.

What will you do?

  • Organize member outreach, engagement and mobilization activities for existing membership.
  • Implement the CIPP mobilization model based on one-to-one conversations to expand CIPP’s network of leaders.
  • Support the development of participatory, member-driven strategies, plans and tactics to build power for the next round of bargaining.
  • Collaborate with the Communications and Member Engagement Manager to develop communications materials (ex. emails, web posts, event pages, newsletters, visual assets) to support union organizing goals.
  • Train and support groups of members to take on important leadership roles and grow and develop their own networks within a decentralized organizing model.
  • Identify additional training needs and opportunities to continue to build the capacity of leaders and organizers.
  • Communicate key information on mobilization strategies with members, union leadership and staff.
  • Collaborate with the Communication and Member Engagement Manager to develop campaign materials, training materials, organizing strategies, plans and tactics.
  • Use digital organizing tools to support all activities (ex. databases, Action Network, Action Builder, New Mode, Zoom).
  • Promote digital campaigns through the CIPP organizing model.
  • Monitor membership engagement using digital organizing tools, keeping accurate records of, and reporting on, member engagement, feedback, and participation to inform future network mobilization strategies and decision-making.
  • Follow accessibility best practices and ensure all organizing actions are taken using a justice, equity, diversity and inclusion lens.
  • Work as part of a team to ensure consistency, coordination and a high-level of information sharing with Communication and Member Engagement Manager and CIPP Executive Director.

What are the requirements?

  • University degree in social sciences, labour relations or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • One to two years of experience organizing in a labour, political or community context or equivalent.
  • Experience in a labour union or member-driven organization.
  • Familiarity with digital organizing tools and data management.
  • Experience in leading and motivating volunteers, members and staff.
  • Experience in the development of communications materials is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Ontario and Canadian labour movements.
  • Understanding of organizing, engagement and mobilization techniques to engage union members.
  • Dynamic communication skills including written and oral proficiency in English.
  • Proficiency in French is an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to integrate anti-oppression principles into your work.
  • Ability to work independently and with a high degree of initiative.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire others to achieve collective goals.
  • Ability to develop contacts and leads which will benefit organizing campaigns.
  • Innovative, flexible and open-minded.
  • Highly motivated.

Working Conditions

  • Temporary full-time position (35 hours / week).
  • 18-month contract
  • The salary range is $100,000 to $122,000 with a generous benefits package.
  • Hybrid work with attendance at the office and other locations throughout the city as required.
  • Additional hours during evenings or weekends may be required on occasion.

CIPP is stronger and most effective when we reflect the diversity of the population we serve. All candidates who are qualified are encouraged to apply, especially equity groups including members of a racialized group, persons living with a disability, Indigenous Peoples, and the 2SLGBTQIA community.

In compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act ( AODA’), please notify us if you require accommodation during any stage of the recruitment process.
