What you’ll do

  • Plan, develop and conduct public health surveillance identified by the Observatory and the Chief Medical Health Officers to meet both provincial and local population health surveillance needs.
  • Critically evaluates and appraises epidemiological methodological issues and ensure appropriateness of analysis and interpretation of data / results.
  • Undertake critical appraisals of epidemiological, statistical and scientific evidence to conduct risk assessments, identify knowledge gaps and validate data integrity.
  • Translate data for use by decision makers and communities through developing reports and surveillance products including design, compilation, synthesis, dissemination and evaluation.
  • Synthesize and promote the utilization of surveillance findings through knowledge translation strategies, including oral presentations.
  • Collaborate with relevant diverse stakeholders and partners in the planning, design and development of local and / or population health analysis and surveillance projects.
  • Contribute expertise to the development of epidemiological projects including methodologies, approaches and models.
  • Participate in and / or leads provincial and regional population health surveillance initiatives and networks as appropriate.
  • Provide support to management of health surveillance data stewardship by the Observatory and its key data partners.
  • Maintain current knowledge of new developments, trends and research in population health surveillance.

What you bring

Qualifications

A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Master’s degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, or Health Information Sciences and a minimum of four (4) years of recent related public health surveillance experience.

You will also have

  • Thorough knowledge of epidemiological principles, research methodologies, data management, health surveillance, health indicator development and management, and biostatistical techniques are required.
  • Strong research, analytic and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian public health surveillance systems and data resources relevant to area of expertise.
  • Ability to identify and analyze trends and changes in disease and corresponding risk factors, contributory factors, incidence and prevalence rates, outcomes and other relevant epidemiological measures.
  • Communication, including report writing and presentation of findings, and organizational skills to collaborate in a multidisciplinary environment on research and surveillance planning required.
  • Experience with national surveys, large administrative and / or clinical datasets as well as proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and R / Rstudio are required.
  • Thorough knowledge, demonstrated experience, and / or formal training in Python, SAS, Tableau, Power BI or GIS analysis are an asset.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
  • Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
