POSITION
Champlain College Saint-Lambert is seeking the services of a STUDENT LIFE COUNSELLOR (Indigenous Support), to work on a temporary full-time basis in the Student Services department, including half-time in the indigenous community. This is a specific project with the possibility of renewal.

FUNCTIONS
Reporting to the Director of Student Services, and working in collaboration with Student Services, the incumbent will be responsible for the overall operation of the Indigenous Student Resource Centre and act as the College’s liaison with First Nations Adult Education School Council, Kahnawake Education Center, Kahnawake Survival School, other education representatives from other indigenous communities, and assist with the college's Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) initiatives.

1. Provide guidance in the development of student plans for success including goals, timelines, referrals, and participation in workshops;
2. Support the student application process, registration, course selection, and locating community services when necessary by liaising with colleagues and services where appropriate;
3. Develop and maintain transition programming to support the successful move to college and university studies, carried out in collaboration with other support services;
4. Effectively liaise with students, colleagues, faculty members and staff in other departments and provide referrals when appropriate, to Student Accessibility Services, Student Counselling Services, and other departments as well as community resources;
5. Provide support that will enable students to develop and exercise a positive approach for study by meeting regularly with students;
6. Plan, organize, and deliver personal support workshops in relation to Indigenous wellness and the Holistic Approach to Student Support;
7. Plan and organize cultural and social events in collaboration with other departments, staff, student volunteers and community organizations;
8. Plan, organize, and deliver cultural and educational workshops, including liaising with Elders and Indigenous knowledge holders;
9. Liaise with faculty on student issues;
10. Engage with faculty and staff at Champlain College Saint Lambert so that they gain a deeper understanding of Indigenous student success and the Office of Indigenous Initiatives’ approach and practice;
11. Recruit, train, supervise and provide ongoing support and guidance to the Indigenous Student Ambassadors Program that assists with successful transition of Indigenous students into college studies and the college environment as well as supporting the College community its Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) initiatives;
12. Act as a resource person for the Champlain Indigenous and Decolonization Certificate;
13. Support College level courses in indigenous languages that take place within the community;
14. Support to maintain the functioning of the indigenous Advisory Committee;
15. Support the Admissions Office in the tours, and visits from Indigenous counsellors, Indigenous secondary school students as well as the planning of Indigenous activities on campus and in communities to promote higher education. Requirements : Education:
Must have an Undergraduate degree in an appropriate field of specialization such as Sociology, Applied Human Sciences, First Nations Studies or equivalent education from an indigenous community recognized by the competent authority.

Experience and understanding of Indigenous values, needs, history and culture;
Proven engagement with and connection to local Indigenous communities;
Ability to make learning inclusive and accessible for students from Indigenous communities;
Understanding of Indigenous issues relating to higher education;
Proven ability to work as part of an integrated team and the ability to work independently;
Ability to exercise a high level of initiative and responsibility, work independently and establish own priorities and meet deadlines;
Excellent communication skills in English;
Knowledge of an Indigenous language would be an asset;
Knowledgeable with Microsoft Office suite;
Preference will be given to Indigenous candidates;

The majority of our Indigenous students are English speaking. The incumbent will be required to work in English in order to support our Indigenous students. Required Tests : The candidates may be required to submit to a language test as well as Word and Excel tests.
