EDUCATION ASSISTANT (Temporary)
ONE POSITION FOR SANGSTER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
SIX HOURS PER WEEK, ONE DAY.
TO SUPPORT STUDENTS IN A VARIETY OF CLASSROOMS INCLUDING A STUDENT / STUDENTS WITH AUTISM, NEEDING BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT AND LEARNING ASSISTANCE.
CANDIDATES MUST :
- TAKE DIRECTION FROM TEACHERS, INCLUSIVE EDUCATION SPECIALISTS, AND SUPERVISORS
- WORK AS A MEMBER OF A TEAM AND FOLLOW STUDENT PROGRAMS AS DIRECTED IN IEP
- IMPLEMENT ADAPTED OR MODIFIED CURRICULUM, WHEN NEEDED
- IMPLEMENT LIFESKILLS CURRICULUM
- PREPARE VISUAL SUPPORTS AND IMPLEMENT LOW TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS
- IMPLEMENT AUGMENTATIVE ALTERNATIVE COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS
- DEMONSTRATE UNDERSTANDING OF DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES IN LANGUAGE ACQUISITION
- BE ABLE TO PHYSICALLY SUPPORT STUDENTS
- FACILITATE DAILY LIVING SKILLS (FEEDING, DRESSING, TOILETING, MOBILITY)
- IMPLEMENT DAILY EXERCISE PROGRAM UNDER DIRECTION OF AN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST OR PHYSIOTHERAPIST
- DEMONSTRATE INDIVIDUAL INITIATIVE JUDGEMENT AND ABLE TO COLLECT DATA
- DEMONSTRATE AND PRACTICE PROACTIVE BEHAVIOUR STRATEGIES AND ABLE TO WORK EFFECTIVELY WITH STUDENTS WHO DEMONSTRATE CHALLENGING BEHAVIOUR
- DEMONSTRATE UNDERSTANDING OF SOCIAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT, SOCIAL INTERACTION, AND PEER RELATIONSHIP
- FACILITATE DEVELOPMENT OF SELF-MONITORING SKILLS, BOUNDARIES, AND STUDENT INDEPENDENCE
- HAVE A RECOGNIZED TEACHING ASSISTANT CERTIFICATE OR EQUIVALENT TRAINING
- SUPPORTING STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC GOALS
QUALIFICATIONS AS PER JOB DESCRIPTION.
Terms of Employment : All instructional days, September through June
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
1. Secondary school graduation or equivalent
2. Education Assistant Certification or equivalent in related field or equivalent experience working with individuals with disabilities, behaviour disorders, learning and physical disabilities, syndromes and disorders that affect the learning of students
3. Minimum three (3) months of experience working with children
4. Knowledge and understanding of child development
5. Familiarity with Individual Education Plans and Individual Care Plans an asset
6. Ability to implement modified and adapted curriculum
7. Basic computer skills with ability to read and form emails, view word / excel documents, navigate internet and use web-based applications
8. Physical ability to respond to student needs (i.e. bolting)

RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Participates in the planning and implementation of Individual Education Plan goals, objectives and supports
2. Participates in supervision of students within the school, on the playground and on field trips, including the transitioning between activities in and outside the school building
3. Assists students during classroom activities
4. Supports social inclusion in the classroom and on the playground through implementing self-regulation strategies, behaviour support strategies, communication strategies and monitoring behaviour
5. Objectively observes and records student behaviour, as required
6. Reports safety, unusual behaviour, and discipline concerns to the principal or designate, but resolves any minor disagreements where possible
7. May support personal care needs of students (e.g. glucagon testing, toileting, feeding)
8. Attends to minor cuts or bruises, referring students to first aid attendant as required
9. May be required to physically assist students using lifts and transfers
10. May be required to support transferring students on and off busses
11. Walks or runs, indoors and outdoors, in various weather conditions
12. Remains current in school, district and provincial policies and guidelines relevant to role (e.g. Provincial Physical Restraint and Seclusion Guidelines)
13. Performs other related duties as time permits and / or assigned as required
RATE OF PAY AS PER THE CUPE COLLECTIVE AGREEMENT.
DUTIES TO COMMENCE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND WILL CONCLUDE UPON THE RETURN OF THE INCUMBENT OR UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTIFIED BY THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT.
