Job Summary

The Eating Disorders Program at BC Children's Hospital provides evidence-based treatment for children and youth with eating disorders.

The principal investigator (PI) is the lead researcher in the Eating Disorders Program. This position will support a grant-funded study on training of health professionals who work in the field of eating disorders.

The research assistant will help with study administration and data entry / checking, recruitment of participants, administering measures and interviewing clinicians, youth with eating disorders and their families.

The research assistant will also work with the PI and the research / knowledge translation coordinator, assisting with knowledge translation activities and disseminating research results.

Organizational Status

The Research Assistant will report to the Principal Investigator of the research team, and research coordinator on this team.

This position will also work and interact with clinicians, youth, and their families who are participating in this grant-funded project.

Work Performed

Follows operating procedures for evaluating outcomes of the Provincial Eating Disorders Training Hub

Oversees the progress of projects in the program, including database management

Recruitment of participants (clinicians, youth and families), and collects, records, analyzes and interprets experiment results

Assists in the design of research studies

Writes reports and assists in writing ethics applications.

Assists with knowledge translation activities, including preparation of reports

Assists with aspects of running the project, including purchasing supplies and equipment and maintain accounts for the project

Oversees and directs the work of junior staff and students

Performs other duties as required.

Consequence of Error / Judgement

The program relies on maintaining strong working relationships with clinicians, youth and their families. Therefore professionalism and confidentiality are of the utmost importance.

Errors in data recording and entry will negatively impact the study and program overall.

Supervision Received

Works under general supervision, receiving specific instructions for new tasks, and thereafter on new or unusual problems or on matters which depart significantly from established policy and procedure.

The research assistant will participate in weekly research meetings with the PI and other members of the research team.

Supervision Given

Supervisory responsibilities for 1-2 work learn / summer studentship students.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in a clinical research setting and / or conducting clinical interviews preferred.

Ability to be thorough, accurate, and have a high level of attention to detail.

Ability to identify and correct missing and incomplete data.

Ability to accurately maintain appointment calendars, and schedule appropriate appointments.

Ability to create and accurately maintain record and filing systems.

Ability to gather, record, and organize information.

Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities.

Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.

Ability to effectively use Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, SPSS, and the internet at an intermediate level.

Ability to deal with people in a courteous, calm manner.

Ability to approach interactions with an awareness of sensitive issues.

Ability to exercise confidentiality, tact and discretion.

Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.

Ability to exercise sound judgment.
