Job description

We are currently seeking a Lead Maintenance Mechanic at the facility, located in Richmond Hill on the Day Shift. This role will report to the Operations Manager and will be responsible for maintenance team employees. This position is ideal for an individual with a strong mix of leadership experience in food co-packaging or manufacturing environment, an ability to work with various systems and processes, and a desire to take on new challenges in a fast paced and exciting customer focused environment.

Shifts: Full Time, Day Shift

Job Type: Permanent, Full-time

Pay Range: $35 - $39 per hour based on experience.

The successful candidate will:

  • Working with the maintenance planner, source the required parts in the most cost-effective way.
  • Develop comprehensive work plans for the maintenance department and team, covering Preventive Maintenance (PM) and corrective work.
  • Provide input into maintenance budgetary control and maintenance expenditures, by prioritizing repairs and providing input into expenses.
  • Assist with, implement, and maintain an effective maintenance strategy.
  • Assist the maintenance planner with assigning technicians to jobs and evaluate their work.
  • Work closely with operations management and assist in the implementation of capital projects related to maintenance activities.
  • Oversee and coordinate activities with external professionals such as electricians, plumbers, and other contractors as required.
  • Assist the maintenance planner in developing and maintaining a structured planning and scheduling routine for preventive maintenance of equipment.

  • Inspect and ensure the maintenance of essential building systems, including heating, electrical, air conditioning, and ventilation, etc.
  • Ensure that staff maintain a heightened awareness of safety in all maintenance tasks, providing necessary training and enforcing safety protocols to ensure Health and Safety compliance.
  • Enforce Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and ensure compliance with food safety regulations.
  • Drive daily focus on continuous improvement to support site productivity targets.
  • Lead continuous learning initiatives to enhance the skills and knowledge of team members.
  • Lead root cause analysis of unplanned equipment breakdown to drive improved equipment uptime, work with maintenance planner and production leadership to optimize up-time and machine reliability.
  • Be hands-on, perform various maintenance tasks as needed, including repairs, troubleshooting, and equipment servicing.
  • Conduct daily, weekly, and monthly huddles to ensure effective communication and coordination within the maintenance team.
  • Oversee maintenance activities to efficiently resolve identified problems.
  • Manage staff hours effectively to optimize productivity and efficiency.
  • Ensure accurate monthly reporting and validation of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Follow all Company health and safety policies and procedures and work in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education/Work experience requirements:

  • Previous experience as a Lead Maintenance Mechanic or similar in a food facility;
  • Education in industrial maintenance, electromechanical technology, or other relevant field of study is an asset.
  • 3-5 years in a similar role.
  • Professional Certifications will be considered an advantage;
  • In-depth knowledge of different building systems (heating, electrical, air conditioning, ventilation etc.);
  • Familiarity with relevant health and safety standards and regulations;
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills;
  • Outstanding communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.

Key technical & behavioural competencies:

  • Previous experience with CMMS, SAP or other ERP software systems, including Nulogy, considered an asset;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products such as Word and Excel;
  • Strong strategic and critical thinking abilities;
  • Customer focused with strong interpersonal skills;
  • Reevaluating existing priorities and readjust priorities based on business demands
  • Ability to lead a dynamic team and increase overall performance.
