Overview
As a member of the military, Weapons Engineering Technicians are responsible for the corrective and planned maintenance activities of the Weapons, Communications, Radar and Marine Navigation systems onboard a ship.
The primary responsibilities of Weapons Engineering Technicians include :
- Monitoring and evaluating the performance of electronic equipment
- Operating electronic diagnosis systems, specialized tools, and test equipment
- Performing diagnostic analysis on components and systems to identify faults
- Repairing faulty electronic equipment to restore system function
- Inspecting, maintaining, and installing electronic components
- Compiling test logs, evaluation reports, and equipment maintenance documentation; reading and interpreting electronic drawings
Work environment
Weapons Engineering Technicians spend much of their career onboard ships with home ports in Halifax, Nova Scotia, or Esquimalt, British Columbia. They experience unique challenges such as working in small spaces, on open decks, and rotating shifts or watch systems.
Typically, they work the regular day shift onboard assigned ships. Additional duties may include cleaning, painting, working in the cafeteria, and loading supplies.
If you join the Regular Force, after completing all required training, you will be assigned to your first base with possible relocations. If you join the Primary Reserve Force, you will work part-time with a Reserve unit, typically one night per week and some weekends, with potential for full-time employment.
Entry plans
The minimum education requirement is the completion of Grade 10 or Secondary 4 in Quebec, including Grade 10 Applied Math. A Physics course is an asset.
Ideal candidates will have a college diploma or Red Seal in a related civilian occupation. Foreign education may be accepted.
The Non-Commissioned Member Subsidized Training and Education Program (NCMSTEP) offers paid training, including basic and on-the-job training, with full salary, medical, and dental care, in exchange for a service commitment.
Training
Initial training includes Basic Military Qualification at Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, and academic training at Naval Fleet School Atlantic in Halifax. Training covers mathematics, physics, electronics, communications, radar, sonar, shipboard weapons systems, and safety.
Specialized skills can be developed through additional courses and on-the-job training.
Naval recruits attend environmental training at Naval Fleet Schools in Esquimalt or Halifax.
