Job description

We’ve opened a role in our Sudbury and Timmins offices for a talented and entrepreneurial Structural Engineer to work alongside exceptional people in JLR’s Structural group.

Pop Quiz:

  • Are you a resourceful, dynamic, and driven Structural Engineer with at least five years of experience in the design and construction of industrial/mining structures?
  • Are you a natural leader with a personal vision, entrepreneurial spirit, and a big-picture mindset?
  • Are you looking to expand your knowledge with the implementation of new codes and practices while working with an experienced team to deliver projects using collaborative technologies and innovative design approaches?
  • Are you interested in helping clients develop, renew and maintain critical assets to facilitate resource extraction and fuel the northern Ontario economy?

If you scored four for four, JLR has a home for you! JLR’s extensive and expanding client base provides our engineers with the opportunity to flex their technical muscle of a wide range of challenging projects. You’ll be supported by a Platinum Club member of Canada’s Best Managed Companies program, firm that has a long-established reputation for quality services in multiple sectors, while you take on existing clients, develop new relationships, and deliver world-class, innovative solutions that support community building and growth in our cities.

JLR is a creative, tight-knit, and mentorship-focused community with unique opportunities for driven people with tenacity and spirit. Our organization is made up of diverse employee owners with specialized expertise in a wide range of disciplines. Joining the JLR team means joining a dynamic group of innovative architecture, engineering, and planning professionals and support staff. You’ll have the opportunity to help establish new clients and partner with existing ones to develop insightful solutions and see projects through from inception to completion.

If you’re innovative and collaborative, thrive when presented with new challenges, and are eager to take your career in new directions, then JLR is the right environment for you.

Your Role as an Industrial/Mining Structural Engineer:

Choose your own adventure! Let’s talk about how your skills, experience, goals, and passions can find a home at JLR. As a Structural Engineer, your role will include:

  • Working and collaborating with an established, multidisciplinary, integrated technical team of engineers, architects, planners, and technologists.
  • Supporting project teams in the completion of underground and surface infrastructure projects in support of our mining and industrial markets, from concept to completion.
  • Completing feasibility studies, ranging from scoping-level studies to preliminary engineering and costing.
  • Conducting building and structural condition assessments, feasibility studies, and detailed design for various assets on mine and industrial sites such as headframes, conveyor galleries, equipment access/foundations, and various underground and surface structures.
  • Participating in the development of competitive proposals to secure new assignments.
  • Assisting with the management of workload to ensure that project deadlines are met and final deliverables align with client expectations.
  • Mentoring junior engineers and technologists.
  • Developing into a Discipline Lead on multidisciplinary projects, taking leadership of the structural design team, driving the overall structural design, coordinating across all intersecting disciplines, taking responsibility for the budget and schedule of the structural deliverables, being responsible for the QA/QC processes, and stamping the final deliverables.
  • Assisting senior staff with business development initiatives including managing and building client relationships, as directed by the Mining Market Chief and under the guidance of other senior staff. This requires regular check ins with clients, understanding broad client needs and expectations, understanding upcoming opportunities, managing the preparation of proposals, whether sole sourced or invited bid, and working with the multidisciplinary teams and the Market Chief to prepare competitive service offerings.
