Reporting to the Chair of the School of Environment and Geomatics (SEG) this position provides instructional support to the faculty, staff, and students in all of the School of Environment and Geomatics and assists in the operation of the SEG equipment room. Applicants may be offered partial appointments depending on experience with 50% available for general SEG faculty assistant duties and 17% available for GIS programming faculty assistant duties.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning Support:
- Assist with field and lab instruction across programs (e.g., field support, lab prep, grading, student supervision).
- Support lab setup/takedown and cover instructional gaps as needed.
- Participate in School and program meetings and contribute to instructional planning
- GIS-specific: Support labs in GIS courses Support drone-based and other spatial data collection (various sensors) and data processing. Set up of GIS apps for field data collection Create GIS products to support labs
Equipment Room Operations and Technical Support:
- Provide front-line support to students, faculty, staff, and the public.
- Assisting with lab set-up and takedown, including organization and transportation of equipment
- Maintain, monitor, and issue equipment, tools, and supplies, including record-keeping.
- Attend equipment room opening hours
- Support equipment calibration, maintenance, and safe operation.
- Maintain WHMIS safety documentation
- Oversee consumable and capital ordering (excluding fleet-related items).
- GIS-specific: Test, maintain, and support GIS software and equipment.
Van Fleet Support (as required):
- Assist with vehicle inspections and documentation.
- Support fleet log oversight (trips, drivers, mileage) in the absence of the coordinator.
Risk Management and Compliance:
- Assist with risk management processes, documentation, and communication.
- Maintain records for waivers, incident reports, and first aid certification.
- Support field lab documentation (itineraries, class lists) and daily check-in procedures.
Student Experience and School Support:
- Maintain lab spaces and School resources.
- Assist with student communications, records, and job boards.
- Support School outreach (e.g., social media, newsletter) and events
- Act as a front-line student support resource
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Excellent interpersonal, time management, and organizational skills
- Proven knowledge of procedures in purchasing and receiving materials, tools, equipment, and supplies;
- Proven computer skills including use of Microsoft software, email, and internet
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Awareness of WorkSafe BC policies and relevant legislation related to duties within School
- Proven knowledge of field software on tablets, e.g. Avenza, Survey 123, and relevant software related to environmental fields (e.g., uploading data from tablets/GPS devices)
- Experience in risk management in a field setting including: Implementing and supporting appropriate safety procedures Taking responsibility for crew safety Documenting safety procedures Providing safety training
- If supporting GIS programs, proven knowledge of Standard industry GIS and remote sensing software (open-source and proprietary) workflows for collecting and processing Remotely Piloted Aerial System (RPAS) data using a variety of sensors
Education and Experience
- If supporting non-GIS courses or programs:
- Degree in a Natural Resources or Environmental discipline, or a diploma in the same discipline with additional equivalent experience
- If supporting GIS courses or programs:
- Degree or advanced diploma in GIS or related discipline
- Canadian Advanced RPAS pilot license
- Demonstrated experience with common workflows and software used in GIS
- Basic First Aid or equivalent certification accepted by Worksafe BC
- Two years’ experience with environmental field work
- WHMIS certification
- Valid BC Driver’s License – Class 4
- Canoe certification preferred
- Other certifications considered an asset such as electrofishing, S-100, CABIN
This is a short-term, part-time position (up to 67%), commencing August 10, 2026, and ending April 29, 2027. Salary and Benefits are in accordance with the SCFA Collective Agreement. The salary range is $2,167.31 - $3,473.00 bi-weekly (at 100% appointment) and is based on qualifications and experience. Preference will be given to SCFA members who are on layoff status and eligible for recall, as outlined in Articles 5.6 and 5.9 of the SCFA Collective Agreement.
