The Office of Facilities & Infrastructure Planning provides leadership in infrastructure and space planning, facilities management, project design and implementation to support the Faculty’s academic mission and operations.
Your opportunity :
With dual reporting to the Director, Facilities & Infrastructure Planning (DFIP), Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering (FASE) and the Director, Research Compliance and Safety (DRSC), Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), the FASE Health and Safety Advisor (HSA) is responsible for achieving and maintaining health and safety compliance within the Faculty. The HSA is responsible for ensuring that FASE meets its statutory and regulatory obligations under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Workplace Safety Insurance Act. The HSA is responsible for providing strategic advice and program development, conducting workplace assessments, investigating health and safety hazards and accidents, developing training programs, preparing reports, acting as a liaison and resource person for joint health and safety committees and interprets health and safety legislation for unionized and non-unionized staff, faculty and students.
The incumbent will work with relevant stakeholders to identify and coordinate the implementation of corrective actions, if needed, to ensure the highest level of health and safety practices across FASE and to enhance the culture of health and safety among our students, faculty and staff. Working closely with the Vice Dean Undergraduate and Vice Dean Research and with those individuals in the Faculty’s Departments, Institutes, Divisions and Centres having specific health & safety responsibilities, the HSA will provide workplace assessments of teaching and research laboratories, will ensure that FASE teaching and research laboratories comply with the relevant health and safety standards, and will develop and implement occupational hygiene, health and safety programs and procedures, including training and presentations to graduate and undergraduate students, faculty and staff. The HSA also represents the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering and the Office of Environmental Health and Safety at Ministry of Labour (MOL), Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) meetings, grievance and arbitration meetings, investigations and inspections. The successful candidate will approach health and safety through an inclusive lens, recognizing and addressing the diverse needs, lived experiences, and risks faced by employees, staff and students across different roles, identities and backgrounds.
Your responsibilities will include :
- Participates in and provides assessments and advice to management regarding health and safety concerns brought forward by unionized employees.
- Provides advice and guidance to management to ensure that employer obligations under the Ontario Health and Safety legislation are being met.
- Reviews health and safety practices in order to minimize employer liability and ensure legislative compliance.
- Investigates alleged health and safety violations presented by unionized and non-unionized employees.
- In consultation and collaboration with the Office of EHS and the Divisional HR Office, provides expert health and safety advice to management, DFIP, Vice-Deans and Academic Administrators in order to develop and guide responses to unionized members and union representatives.
- In collaboration with the Office of EHS and the Office of the Dean, FASE, provides support in the management of health and safety matters across the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering.
- Regularly reports to the DRSC of EHS and the DFIP, FASE on environmental health and safety related matters including working closely with the Health and Safety Specialists on complex and serious cases and coordinating various activities as a result of complex health and safety situations.
- Assesses concerns raised by unionized staff members in relation to risk, validity and provides advice accordingly.
- Conducts workplace assessments of laboratories teaching and research laboratories and non-laboratory spacesacross the Faculty.
- Implements policies and procedures adopted in consultation and collaboration with the Office of EHS and the Office of the Dean.
- Develops tracking systems for workplace inspections including creating inspection resources and information packages, committee correspondence, meeting action items, accident reports, meeting minutes, and other compliance issues.
- Drafts and develops inspection procedures to achieve compliance in collaboration with FASE Joint Health and Safety Committee, Local Safety Committees, EHS and the DFIP.
- Writes health and safety procedures, guidelines, and / or directives based on knowledge of relevant legislation and University’s obligation under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Develops and maintains the FASE Health and Safety website with Engineering Strategic Communications in compliance with approved links and security.
