Job description

Assistant Professor – Contractually Limited Term Appointment : Religion in Transnational East Asia

Description :

The Department for the Study of Religion and the Department of East Asian Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a two-year full-time Contractually Limited Term Appointment (CLTA) in the area of Religion in Transnational East Asia. This would be a joint appointment between the Department for the Study of Religion (60%) and the Department of East Asian Studies (40%). The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2024.

Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. degree in the Study of Religion, East Asian Studies or a related discipline by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths. We are especially interested in applicants whose work addresses religion in East Asian transnational contexts (a focus on Japan, Korea, and / or Mongolia is particularly welcome), historical time periods and / or religious traditions open. All applicants must be able to frame their work in terms of broader theoretical, historical, cultural, and political questions.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in both departments and to independently carry out research in the field of the study of religion related to East Asia.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence. This can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranking journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated by teaching accomplishments and the candidate’s teaching dossier submitted as part of the application. The dossier must include a teaching statement, sample course materials, teaching evaluations, and other indicators of teaching accomplishments. Other teaching-related activities can include performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, experience leading successful workshops or seminars, student mentorship, or excellent conference presentations.

Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion (EDI), and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Department for the Study of Religion and Department of East Asian Studies are multidisciplinary humanities departments with established expertise in the study of religion as an historical and cultural phenomenon and the histories, societies, and cultures of East Asia, respectively. The departments are home to popular undergraduate programs and are strongly committed to graduate training. Information about the departments can be found at www.religion.utoronto.ca and www.eas.utoronto.ca .

All qualified candidates are invited to apply online by clicking the link below. Applicants must submit a cover letter; a current curriculum vitae; a research statement outlining current and future research interests; a writing sample; and a complete teaching dossier which includes a teaching statement, sample syllabi, teaching evaluations, or evidence of superior performance in other teaching-related activities as listed above. Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence. We seek candidates who value diversity and whose teaching and service bear out our commitment to equity. Candidates are therefore also asked to submit a 1-2 page statement of contributions to equity and diversity, which might cover topics such as (but not limited to) : teaching that incorporates a focus on underrepresented communities, the development of inclusive pedagogies, or the mentoring of students from underrepresented groups. Candidates are encouraged to consult the Department for the Study of Religion’s Anti-Racism, Decolonization, and Equity Action Plan, available on the DSR website at : https : / / www.religion.utoronto.ca / about-us / our-department / dsr-action-plan-anti-racism-decolonization-and-equity-0

Applicants must provide the name and contact information of three references. The University of Toronto’s recruiting tool will automatically solicit and collect letters of reference from each referee the day after an application is submitted. Applicants remain responsible for ensuring that references submit recent letters (on letterhead, dated and signed) by the closing date. Two of the reference letters must primarily address the candidate’s teaching. More details on the automatic reference letter collection, including timelines, are available in the candidate FAQ.

Submission guidelines can be found at http : / / uoft.me / how-to-apply . Your CV and cover letter should be uploaded into the dedicated fields. Please combine additional application materials into one or two files in PDF / MS Word format. If you have any questions about this position, please contact Professor Pamela Klassen at [email protected] and / or Professor Janet Poole at [email protected].

All application materials, including recent reference letters, must be received by February 1, 2024.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
