We are seeking a Mi’kmaw Indigenous Grief and Bereavement Coordinator (Designated) to join our community in partnership with NS Health. Reporting to the Health Services Manager and accountable to the Grief and Bereavement Practice Lead & Palliative Care Network, the designated Indigenous Grief and Bereavement Coordinator works as part of a team to provide expertise in the development and delivery of a zone-based grief and bereavement program along a continuum to meet a broad range of grief needs that include :

  • Capacity building of NSH workforce and volunteers through grief education and training
  • Development of self-management resources to promote healthy grief responses
  • Providing supportive counselling to individual and / or facilitation of grief groups
  • Collaborating with both internal and external service areas to develop navigation and referral pathways to match grief supports to level of need
  • Building partnerships with community-based organizations / agencies

The successful applicant will specifically support the 3 first nations communities in Northern Zone (Pictou Landing, Millbrook and Sipekne’katik). The area of work will vary, but will be primarily in the above mentioned communities. The GBC demonstrates flexibility and innovation in program design based on zone population needs, strategic priorities, and available resources. The GBC ensures the zone-based program aligns with provincial grief competencies and standards established through the Provincial Palliative Care Network including trauma-informed and palliative care approaches to care as appropriate and integrates principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, reconciliation, and accessibility (EDIRA).

About You

We would love to hear from you if you have the following :

  • Master’s Degree in a health related discipline required (Social Work, Counselling, etc.)
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the professional college of relevant health discipline
  • Minimum of three (3) years clinical experience in grief and bereavement counselling
  • Experience working in palliative care an asset
  • Experience working within Mi'kmaw community agencies an asset
  • Degree, certification courses or workshops pertaining to grief care or thanatology an asset
  • Demonstrated skill as a communicator and group facilitator
  • Evidence of extensive knowledge of community resources accessible to the Mi'kmaw community
  • Evidence of ability to work independently with a multidisciplinary team as well as with both hospital and community based services / agencies
  • Demonstrated use of innovative problem solving and application of evidence based practice
  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, Mi’kmaw preferred

  • Permanent, Full-time position; 75 hours bi-weekly
  • Compensation and Benefits

    40.18 - $54.14 Hourly

    Successful candidates may be eligible for our benefits package which includes health, dental, travel, long-term disability, and life insurance coverage as well as a defined benefit pension plan.
