Northern Lakes College has the following temporary position available:
Chair, Business, and Continuing Education & Corporate Training
Salary: $100,024 to $129,026 per year
Location: Slave Lake
May 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027
Qualifications:
- Master of business, education, adult education, educational leadership, or related (Completed or in-progress)
- A minimum of three (3) years working in a directly related position
- A clean vulnerable sector criminal record check prior to commencement
- A valid Class 5 driver’s license
- A combination of education, training, and experience may be considered
Assets:
- Five (5) years of post-secondary work experience
- Five (5) years of supervisory experience
- Three (3) years working and living in a northern, rural community, or experience with diverse cultures and ethnic groups
Nature and Scope of Work:
Reporting to the Dean, Academic, Business and Regional Stewardship. The Chair is responsible for providing academic, administrative, and entrepreneurial leadership for Business Programs and Continuing Education & Corporate Training (CE&CT). The incumbent oversees the supervision, administration, and operation of both areas. The Chair is the academic and administrative leader of both departments and serves as a representative of the Dean. The chair guides and supports faculty and staff in carrying out the mission of teaching and other professional activities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Major Job Function
- Academic leadership, quality assurance and growth of Business Programs (credit programs)
- Strategic growth, development, and management of CE&CT, which delivers non‑credit courses and programming (CE&CT is the revenue/profit generating department of the College)
- Program planning, curriculum oversight, partnerships, and financial management for all areas of the portfolio
- Identifying new program opportunities and responding to changing industry, employer, and community needs
Supervision and Leadership
- Act as a role model for collegiality, collaboration, integrity, and professionalism across the organization
- Oversight and direction on day-to-day operations for both the Business department and CE&CT
- Development and implementation of department goals, scheduling, and future projects
Program Planning
- Seek out and develop new program opportunities and/or areas for growth.
- Researching labour market, building business cases, providing logistics for delivery options, and implementation/supervision of program deliveries
Budgeting
- Prepare and manage budgets for Business and CE&CT areas
- Present draft budgets at budget planning meetings
- Chair is responsible for supporting the CE&CT team in meeting annual revenue/profit targets
Faculty/Staff Development
- Plan, support, and provide professional development opportunities
- Preparation of staffing requests, develop position descriptions, chair interview panels, and assist with hiring staff
- Ongoing assessment of each individual staff member within the unit
- Manage the Performance Appraisal Cycle for employees within the unit
- Listen and communicate effectively with faculty and staff
- Select and retain outstanding faculty and staff
- Provide overall leadership and direction to department/program faculty
- Identify staff and faculty for awards
Internal/External Liaison and Relationship Building
- Assist the Dean and other internal stakeholders to build relationships with industries and businesses, agencies, communities, and organizations including bands, settlements, and Community Education Committee (CEC)
- Build awareness of the College, its programs in both Business and CE&CT, as well as create opportunities for new training and partnerships
- Duties may also include participating on various boards and working groups within and outside of the College
- Other duties as assigned
Skills/Knowledge:
- Use of Instructional Technologies (synchronous and asynchronous) delivery
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
- Knowledge of academic program delivery within a college setting
